 , providing additional proof that life might have previously existed on Mars.


 Specialists have discovered lengthy carbon chains with up to 12 linked atoms in chunks of ancient Martian rock that are estimated to be billions of years old.


 These particular organic compounds — the most extensive ones detected up to this point — might stem from fatty acids. Fatty acids serve as foundational elements for fats and oils and are typically produced on Earth via biological processes.


 Scientists stated that the finding is of 'significant interest' in the quest for possible indicators of life.


 The samples were gathered using SAM, which stands for Sample Analysis at Mars – an instrument onboard the spacecraft.

 The Curiosity Rover, which has been exploring the Gale Crater since 2012.


 It features both a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer, enabling it to analyze and pinpoint molecules within samples.


 The analysis showed that the gathered mudstone includes the organic compounds decane, undercane, and dodecane.


 The absence of geological activity coupled with the frigid, dry environment on Mars has aided in safeguarding this precious organic material over the last 3.7 billion years.

 The experts stated that it thus originates from the era when life first appeared on our planet.


 Although fatty acids are a crucial part of cellular structures in earthly life forms, these compounds can also originate from non-biological or purely physical processes, they noted.


 In the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the research team reported that their achievements open up new possibilities for upcoming missions aimed at discovering evidence of intricate, life-like chemical processes.


 'They noted that organic molecules conserved within old Martian rocks offer essential evidence for Mars’s potential to support life in the past and might serve as chemical indicators of biological activity.'


 The origin of the long-chain alkanes is still unclear; nonetheless, lab tests suggest they come from the saturated version of straight-chain, primary carboxylic acids—also known as fatty acids.


 While abiotic processes may produce these acids, they are regarded as common outcomes of biochemical reactions—both earthly and possibly Martian.


 'Hence, the origin and spread of these molecules are highly relevant in the quest for possible biosignatures on Mars.'


 Exploring more lifelike chemistry on Mars will be among the objectives of the European Space Agency’s forthcoming ExoMars mission, scheduled for launch in 2028.

「救世主」が「害獣」に。奄美大島のマングース根絶から考える、人間の責任

 世界自然遺産に登録されている鹿児島県・奄美大島の生態系に、危機的な被害をもたらした外来種マングース。毒蛇ハブ対策の「救世主」として、半世紀近く前に野に放たれたが、希少な在来の動物を捕食したり、作物を食い荒らしたりすることが問題となり、一転して「害獣」として駆除の対象に。捕獲専門集団「マングースバスターズ」や関係者の、約３０年にわたる取り組みの結果、環境省は２０２４年９月、根絶を宣言した。


 東京２３区や琵琶湖より広いほどの面積の島で、長期間定着した後の根絶は例がなく、世界各地の外来種対策の参考事例になるとみられる。一方、天敵がいなくなったことで、個体数が回復した国の特別天然記念物アマミノクロウサギによる農業被害が拡大。希少種の保全管理のあり方が新たな課題となっている。

 ▽実は昼行性のマングース、夜行性のハブの天敵にはならず
 


 マングースはイタチに似た細長い体と短い四肢、長い尾が特徴の哺乳類だ。もともと日本にはおらず、ハブやそのエサとなるネズミの駆除を目的に１９１０年、現在のバングラデシュからフイリマングースという種類が沖縄本島に持ち込まれた。


 奄美大島には１９７０年代後半、沖縄本島から数十匹が連れてこられた。１９８３年１月１９日付の奄美地元紙・南海日日新聞によると、旧名瀬市（現奄美市名瀬）の北方の赤崎に「（昭和）５３年から５５年までの３年間に計３０匹のマングースを放し繁殖状況を見守ってきた」。記事では男性の実名入りで「ハブ対策と繁殖実験を兼ねて放した」と報じられている。


 だが、人知の浅はかさが露呈する。マングースは昼間に行動する昼行性だ。一方、ハブは夜行性。そもそも両者が遭遇することはまれで、マングースはハブの天敵になどならなかったのだ。


 すれ違い生活のハブの代わりにマングースのエサとなったのが、アマミノクロウサギやケナガネズミ、アマミイシカワガエルなどの希少な在来種だった。マングース導入は完全に裏目に出て、奄美の生態系は急激にバランスを崩し始めた。


 
 ▽サツマイモ、ひな、ウサギ、被害拡大で脅かされる固有種

 放獣からまもなく、マングースによる被害が確認されるようになった。赤崎のある島北西部で、サツマイモやジャガイモ、スイカなど根菜類や地上で実を付ける作物はことごとく食い荒らされ、鶏舎からはひながさらわれた。


 農家は自衛策として箱わなを仕掛けて捕獲したが、すぐに手に負えなくなった。栽培する作物を根菜類から、マングースが食べない葉物に切り替えもしたが、侵入を防ぐための網やビニールハウスを破る乱行ぶりに、お手上げ状態だった。


 奄美におけるマングースの生息状況を、最初に調査したのは地元の奄美哺乳類研究会。１９９１年発行のリポートによると、奄美固有の野鳥で、国の天然記念物ルリカケスのひなを襲った目撃例があるとして「在来種個体群に対し、マングースが少なからず影響を与えている可能性がある」と指摘。国や県による駆除などの対応を求めた。


 この頃、固有種の宝庫として知られる奄美市名瀬の金作原では被害が顕著になってきた。研究会メンバーで、環境省奄美群島国立公園管理事務所の阿部慎太郎さん（６１）は「マングースの分布が広がるにつれ、たくさんいたアマミノクロウサギなどが見られなくなった。これはまずいと思った」と振り返った。


 
 ▽追いつかない捕獲

 赤崎地区がある旧名瀬市は１９９３年１０月、マングース捕獲者を募集し、駆除に乗り出した。島内の他町村も同調し、島を挙げた態勢となったが、課題は山積していた。マングースは当時の鳥獣保護法により保護動物扱いで、捕獲者を増やしても全体の捕獲数の上限があり、集めたマンパワーを生かし切れなかった。


 また、１匹数千円での買い上げ方式のため、捕獲しやすい農作地帯でわなを仕掛ける人がほとんどで、個体密度が低い山の中に入ってまで捕る人はまれだった。捕獲開始当時の生息数は１万匹以上と推定されたが、繁殖数に捕獲数が追いつかない状態で、抑制どころか島全体へのまん延が懸念される状況となっていった。


 
 ▽捕獲に注力できるように、バスターズ結成

 駆除開始から３年後の１９９６年、環境庁（当時）は奄美大島の生態系保全に向け、マングースの駆除や個体数制御に関するモデル設計に着手。２０００年度から本格的な防除事業が始まった。


 山中の駆除に向けた大きな一手が講じられたのは、外来生物法が施行された２００５年のことだった。捕獲者の待遇を、捕獲した個体を定額で買い取る報奨金制度から、一般財団法人の嘱託職員として月給を支払う雇用制度へと切り替えたのだ。捕獲数が少なくても、手取りは保障されるため、山中の活動に注力できる。マングースを駆除し、環境を元に戻すことを目標に結成されたのがバスターズだ。


 ２００５年度から、環境省の防除事業を受託する一般社団法人自然環境研究センターが全国から募集し、１２人でスタート。２０１２年には最多の５４人が雇用された。


 ２００７年からは、わなを避けるマングースを捕る探索犬を導入。バスターズの後藤義仁さん（４９）は「道なき道に高密度にわなをかけて見回ったり、探索犬とともに森や崖などを歩き回ったりした。ハブやハチと遭遇して被害に遭ったり、崖から転落しそうになったりした人もいる」と語る。


 
 ▽わなに別の動物が…「混獲」問題を解決

 マングースの捕獲が進み始めたことに伴い、個体数が回復してきた在来種がわなにかかってしまう「混獲」が増え始めた。問題となったのは捕殺用の筒わなだ。


 エサを探すために、狭い所に頭を突っ込むマングースの習性を突いたもので、エサのにおいにつられて筒に頭を入れると、中のバネで首が挟まる。天然記念物のルリカケスをはじめアマミトゲネズミやケナガネズミなどが頻繁にかかってしまうようになった。


 バスターズはわなの改良に着手。内部の仕掛けや筒の長さなどに試行錯誤を重ね、２００８年、在来種がかかりにくいわなが完成した。後藤さんは「希少種が捕獲されるのは本末転倒。みんなで考えた混獲対策のアイデアを技術のメンバーが形にしてくれた」と話す。


 駆除が進み、個体数が減少するに従って、２００２年から２００６年まで２千匹台だった捕獲数は２００７年から千匹以下に。２０１４年には百匹以下、２０１８年の１匹を最後に「捕獲ゼロ」が続き、根絶宣言に至った。


 
 ▽「マングースを持ってこなかったら、マングースを殺さなくて良かった」

 自治体による駆除を含め、根絶までのマングース捕獲数は約３万２６００匹。環境省の対策事業費は計３５億７千万円に上る。マングース防除事業は沖縄本島で続いている一方、奄美大島では新たな外来種の侵入警戒に移っている。


 奄美群島国立公園管理事務所の阿部さんは「人がマングースを持ってこなかったら、たくさんのマングースや在来種を殺さなくてよかった。人が起こしたことの尻ぬぐいをバスターズがしてくれた。外来生物が起こした問題とその代償をきちんと考え、島の野生生物のあるべき姿を維持するためにこれからどうしたらいいか考えてほしい」と訴える。


 沖縄大の山田文雄客員教授（７２）によると、マングースは１９世紀にハワイやカリブ海の島々、アフリカの島などでネズミや毒ヘビ対策で導入され、奄美や沖縄同様、希少種の絶滅や生態系危機を引き起こした。「マングース根絶は難しく、奄美大島の事例は海外でも驚きと称賛をもって迎えられている」という。


 一方、アマミノクロウサギをはじめとする希少種の回復に伴い、交通事故や農業被害、居住地への侵入などの問題が新たに発生している。山田客員教授は「希少種が増えることで良いことも悪いことも起きる。行政も住民も、共存するために適切な保全管理策を取ってほしい」と願った。

 Dr. Chris McKnight from County Antrim has been studying why seals can remain submerged without breathing for extended periods compared to numerous other animal species as part of his research at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.


 He discovered that, apart from effectively storing oxygen, they possess a distinctive capability to mentally gauge the levels in their bloodstream to prevent drowning.


 "It's tremendously exciting to discover such a crucial element of marine mammal evolution, which plays a vital role in much of their activity—diving," stated Dr. McKnight.

 "Discovering such a crucial element of marine mammal evolution, which plays a vital role in much of their activity—diving—is immensely thrilling," stated Dr. McKnight.

 "It may appear straightforward and logical that seals can detect oxygen levels, which aids them in making choices to avoid running out of air and drowning; however, from an evolutionary perspective, this places both the species and their bodily functions among the most distinctively adapted creatures," he explained.

 Seals such as Trish and Oisin voluntarily dove into the unit's pool to catch fish while under observation.

 A recent study by researchers at the University of California, Riverside (UCR)
 , suggests that methyl halides could be one such biosignature. These gases, composed of one carbon and three hydrogen atoms bonded to a halogen, are naturally produced by bacteria, algae, fungi, and some plants on Earth, but they are not known to form through abiotic (non-biological) processes.


 This makes them a highly promising target in the search for life. However, there’s a significant obstacle: our current telescopes, including the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), are not yet powerful enough to detect them in Earth-sized exoplanets. Researchers believe, however, that a different class of planets—Hycean worlds—could provide a solution.

 What Are Methyl Halides and Why Do They Matter?
</h2>

 In the hunt for
 alien life
 , scientists rely on finding molecules that are primarily produced by biological organisms. Traditionally, gases such as oxygen, methane, and water vapor have been considered promising biosignatures, but they are not definitive proof of life since they can also be created through geological and atmospheric processes.


 
 Methyl halides, however, are different.
 
 These gases are released into Earth’s atmosphere by biological activity but are not known to be created through purely chemical or geological processes. This makes them particularly valuable as potential biosignatures. If methyl halides were detected in the atmosphere of an exoplanet, it could strongly suggest the presence of life.


 “Unlike an Earth-like planet, where atmospheric noise and telescope limitations make it difficult to detect biosignatures, Hycean planets offer a much clearer signal,” explains
 
 Eddie Schwieterman
 
 , an astrobiologist at UCR.


 The study suggests that

 Why Can’t We Detect These Biosignatures Yet?
</h2>

 James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)
 
 has revolutionized exoplanet research by providing detailed observations of atmospheres, but even JWST has limits.


 ・Size Matters: Earth-sized exoplanets are too small and dim for JWST to observe directly. It can detect atmospheric signatures from larger gas giants, but analyzing smaller rocky planets remains a significant challenge.


 ・Signal Strength: Even if methyl halides exist in an exoplanet’s atmosphere, the concentration may be too low for JWST to detect using current techniques.


 ・Interference from Host Stars: Many promising exoplanets orbit red dwarf stars, which produce intense radiation and atmospheric noise that could obscure potential biosignatures.


 Because of these challenges, Schwieterman and his colleagues suggest that

 —which have thick hydrogen atmospheres and orbit dimmer red dwarf stars—could provide a better opportunity for detection.

 Hycean planets are a relatively new category of exoplanets that astronomers believe could be more

 than Earth-like planets. They are:

 Or perhaps you're thinking of a specific police box (which is larger internally than externally), but that concept isn’t exactly what scientists refer to as "time reflections." Rather, these phenomena happen when the whole medium through which an electromagnetic wave propagates abruptly alters direction. As a result, part of this wave flips backward, causing its frequency to shift into a different one.


 Since these temporal reflections necessitate a consistent change throughout an entire electromagnetic field, experts presumed that generating enough energy to witness them directly would be impractical. However, researchers affiliated with the CUNY Graduate Center’s Advanced Science Research Center (CUNY ASRC) located in New York City have explored this phenomenon.

"We conceived an approach where we wouldn’t modify the inherent qualities of the main material; rather, our plan involves constructing a metamaterial featuring supplementary components that can swiftly be introduced or removed via rapid switching mechanisms.


 This time reflection operates differently compared to spatial reflections. Since this time echo bounces back the latter portion of the signal initially, the researchers indicate that if one were to look into it,

The peculiar and non-intuitive behavior of time reflection contributes significantly to the challenges faced when exploring this idea.


 “It has been truly thrilling to witness this, considering how far back in time this unexpected effect was first theorized, and the stark differences between time-reversed waves and those reflected in space,” stated corresponding author Andrea Alù, a physics professor and director of CUNY ASRC’s Photonics Initiative, in an official release.

No obstante, aquellos científicos dedicados al estudio del planeta prehistórico carecían hasta ahora de certezas sobre si los glaciares neoproterozoicos tenían algún tipo de movimiento, incluso menos aún sabían si eran capaces de moverse lo bastante como para erosionar el lecho rocoso debajo de ellos e introducir minerales en el mar.


 "La teoría sugerida era que la extensa erosión glacial en las áreas internas del continente pudo deberse al hielo de una 'Tierra bola de nieve'", aclara Kirkland, quien es profesor en la Facultad de Ciencias Planetarias y Terrestres de la Universidad Curtin en Perth, Australia.
