 Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier of Vietnam, has initiated a new direct flight service linking Hanoi with Bengaluru — India’s premier technology center — offering four weekly return trips.


 Starting May 7, the airline will also connect Hanoi to Hyderabad, another key Indian tech center, with three weekly round-trips. Both routes use Airbus A321 aircraft.


 The first flight, VN983, commenced from Hanoi on May 1st with over 130 travelers aboard and arrived in Bengaluru later the same day. On the reverse route, VN982 left Bengaluru that evening with more than 160 individuals onboard before landing back in Hanoi at 5:25 a.m. on May 2nd.


 These new additions mean that Vietnam Airlines now operates six direct routes to serve four key Indian cities: New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. This growth aims to meet the increasing demand for travel, driven by expanding commerce, tourism, and collaboration between India and Vietnam.


 India stands out as one of the globe’s most rapidly expanding aviation sectors, boasting a populace exceeding 1.4 billion along with an emerging middle-class demographic. Through links to technology centers such as Bangalore and Hyderabad, Vietnam Airlines underscores its commitment to fostering connections between Vietnam and South Asia, according to Deputy General Director Dang Anh Tuan.


 After venturing into the Indian market, Vietnam Airlines has conducted more than 3,200 flights and catered to over 511,700 passengers. In just 2024, Vietnam saw an influx of over 500,000 tourists from India, placing India amongst its leading ten travel destinations.

 Kang Jae-hyun (28), residing in Mapo-gu, Seoul, recently embarked on a four-day journey to Japan accompanied by a companion. Rather than venturing into well-known destinations such as Tokyo or Osaka, they opted for less frequented locales—Toyama and Kanazawa—in north-central Japan, two smaller urban areas each home to approximately 400,000 inhabitants. "The major Japanese cities tend to be brimming with South Koreans," commented Kang. "What I desired was a more tranquil setting where I could fully immerse myself in the local ambiance."


 In the previous year, approximately 29 million South Korean citizens embarked on international trips. Many of these travelers are now leaning towards exploring unfamiliar places that remain relatively undiscovered by mainstream tourism. In response to this trend, airlines have initiated flights to smaller, lesser-visited urban areas aimed at attracting such adventurous tourists. As competition among various air carriers intensifies, gaining an early foothold in emerging but potentially lucrative route markets has turned into a crucial strategy for success.


 Japanese smaller urban areas exemplify this pattern well. Data from the aviation sector reveals that out of 19 municipalities in Japan which experienced growth in air travel volume over the past year relative to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, as many as thirteen have populations below one million.


 In 2019, Miyako Island (Miyakojima), which is part of the Okinawa Prefecture, saw only six flights originating from South Korea, as reported by the Incheon International Airport Corporation on April 3rd. However, last year, this figure skyrocketed to 308 flights, marking over a fiftyfold growth. As for the first quarter of this year, between January and March, there were already 128 flights operating on this route.


 Likewise, Matsuyama, a city with approximately 510,000 inhabitants in Japan’s Shikoku region, experienced an increase in its flight numbers from 376 in 2019 to 1,074 in the previous year.


 Eastar Jet was the inaugural South Korean airline to launch services to Tokushima, a Japanese city home to around 250,000 people situated in eastern Shikoku. During the initial quarter of this year, the service saw 82 flights operate between them, achieving seat occupancies of 74% in January and peaking at 91% in February. "A majority of Koreans aren’t familiar with Tokushima," noted an Eastar representative. "However, the robust interest indicates that tourists are seeking out distinctive locations."


 According to data provided by Kyowon Tour, bookings for small Japanese cities made up 22.5% of total reservations destined for Japan during the first quarter of this year.


 This trend isn’t limited to Japan; smaller cities across Southeast and Central Asia are seeing increased interest as well. Starting in May, T'way Air plans to introduce a new service to Tashkent, which serves as the capital of Uzbekistan. Historically, travel to Uzbekistan has centered around popular destinations such as Samarkand and Bukhara due to their rich historical ties to the Silk Road. However, this new flight path targets tourists who wish to explore less conventional aspects of contemporary Uzbekistani culture.


 In April, Jin Air launched a new service to Zhengzhou, a significant inland metropolis in China. Back in October, Jeju Air initiated regular flights to Batam, an Indonesian island city located within the Riau Islands archipelago. While most South Koreans traveling to Indonesia typically go to Bali or Jakarta, Jeju Air believes there is promise in developing Batam as a tourist destination due to its underexplored appeal.

 United’s current transpacific routes from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Hong Kong have been scheduled so that they align seamlessly with connecting flights in either direction, ensuring maximum convenience for passengers.  Moreover, Quayle stated that “they will have the right to sell both locally and from North America,” indicating that the airline will be capable of selling routes such as flights from Hong Kong to Bangkok independently or combined with a transpacific journey.  Regarding why Bangkok, United notes that it’s the most visited city in Thailand, and its popularity has surged further due to the hit TV show “The White Lotus.”
 
 
 The seats for these upcoming flights will become available at a later time. It's worth noting that although Bangkok represents a fresh addition to United's route chart, the carrier most recently operated routes to Bangkok from Tokyo’s Narita International Airport (NRT) up until March 2014.
 
 
 During the 2010s, United allocated several wide-body planes specifically for operating brief intra-Asian hops—this was an inefficient and expensive arrangement considering these routes probably generate less revenue. However, this time around, United plans to manage the operations of the two new markets with just one airplane.

 Starting October 26th, United will introduce an additional "tag flight" route from Hong Kong to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
 
 
 This daily service will utilize a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner as well. As mentioned earlier, United plans to use an airplane arriving from either Los Angeles or San Francisco. The airline will subsequently dispatch this plane for approximately a six-hour round trip to Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN). Afterward, it will fly back to Hong Kong where it will be used for overnight flights returning to the U.S.
 
 
 Notably, United chose not to introduce these two new routes from Tokyo, despite recently introducing new services to Mongolia, Taiwan, and the Philippines.
 
 
 Quayle clarified that the selection of Hong Kong was primarily due to geographical factors rather than any other considerations.
 
 
 "We are focusing on linking everything in the most effective way possible. This approach works particularly well for locations such as Taiwan, Mongolia, and even Cebu, where using narrow-body planes from Tokyo Narita proves to be more efficient. These connections are carefully coordinated so that our flights heading to Newark, Houston, San Francisco, Denver, and Los Angeles can seamlessly depart from Narita," he explained.
 
 
 Quayle says that Ho Chi Minh City is a "dynamic and rapidly expanding location," and tickets for this new route will go on sale within the next few weeks.
 
 
 This essentially marks a service restart for United, since the carrier last operated flights between Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City back in October 2016, according to Cirium schedules.

 United is currently the biggest U.S. carrier serving Australia, and it will expand even further next year when it launches service to Adelaide.
 
 
 On December 11th, the airline will initiate its inaugural services from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Adelaide International Airport (ADL), offering three weekly flights. For this new 8,070-mile journey, they plan to use a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, operating alongside an existing route.

 Tickets are now on sale, and United asserts that this new route will act as a "game-changer" for services extending past its current Australian locations of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Previously, these journeys required at least two stops. It’s worth noting that no other carrier has historically offered direct flights from the U.S. to Adelaide, making it intriguing to observe how United’s service performs in this market.

 in October 2023 — and clearly, the service has been successful enough to add both daytime and nighttime flights. Better yet, the additional service will be operated by United's largest jet, the Boeing 777-300ER, which features 60 Polaris business-class pods, 24 Premium Plus recliners, 62 Economy Plus extra-legroom seats and 204 standard economy seats.

 In an era when airlines have been
 busy cutting unprofitable routes
 , it's refreshing to hear Quayle reaffirm that "we're not cutting anything. Everything [announced today] is growth."
 
 
 Certainly, the airline needs to demonstrate that it can populate these additional routes; however, the winter flights introduced earlier will all be making their return for yet another season.
 
 
 "We have been highly effective in managing our airline operations and ensuring profitability. Our primary goals are to generate returns for our shareholders and to facilitate global connections. We believe we excel at achieving these objectives simultaneously," stated Quayle.

 아시아나항공은 다음 달인 2027년까지 예정된 대한항공との 통합을 앞두고 부채 항목 중 하나인 마일리를 정산하기 위해 미국에서 특별히 마일리지만 사용할 수 있는 비행기를 운영하게 됐습니다. 이러한 조치는 회사의 재무 구조를 개선하고 통합 준비를 하려는 의도가 반영되었습니다.
 
 
 24일 항업계 소식통에 따르면 아시아나항공이 다음 달부터 인천에서 로스앤젤레스(LA)와 뉴욕으로 가는 route를 포함해 총 6편의 운행 스케줄 동안 마일리지를 위한 전용 항공사를 운영할 계획입니다. 회원들을 격려하여 495좌석 규모의 A380 대형 여객기를 이용합니다. 할인된 마일리를 통해 일반 좌석은 왕복 요금 없이 간격 없는 비수기에 경유하는 경우 3만 5천 마일, 그리고 비즈니스 클래스는 같은 조건 하에 6만 2천 5백 마일이 필요하게 됩니다.
 
 
 아시아나항공이 미주 노선에서 마일리지를 전용으로 사용하는 비행기를 운행하기로 한 것은 통합 이전의 부채와 책임을 줄이는 방법이라고 해석할 수 있다.
 
 
 마일리는 일반적으로 항공사의 부채로 간주되며, 따라서 대한항공과 아시아나가 마일리지 제도를 통합하게 될 시에는 아시아나의 마일리지 남은 부분이 대한항공에게 추가적인 짐으로 작용될 가능성이 있습니다.

 일부에서는 약 1조 원 규모의 사용되지 않은 마일리지가 통합 이전까지 소진되지 않을 경우 마일리지 가치가 떨어질 수 있음을 걱정하는 의견이 제기되고 있다.
 
 
 양사의 마일리지를 1:1 비율로 합치는 것이 쉽지 않을 수 있고, 아시아나항공 마일리지가 불이익을 받는 방식으로 바뀔 가능성도 있다고 한다.
 
 
 항공사와 관련된 한 소식통은 "소비자들이 통합 이전에 최대한으로 마일리를 효율적으로 이용해야 한다"면서도 "통합 절차 중에는 임시로 마일리지의 활용이 제약받거나 복잡해져서 일부 특별 혜택 또는 파트너 서비스가 줄어들 수 있다고 지적했습니다."
 
 
 이어 “사용 기회가 감소되면 보너스 항공권 예매도 어려워질 수 있어 마일리지 사용 기회가 줄어들 것을 대비해야 한다”고 덧붙였다.
 
 
 한편 조원태 대한항공 회장은 마일리지 통합과 관련해 “합리적인 통합 방안을 도출하고 있다”며 “조만간 통합 방안을 발표할 예정”이라고 밝혔다.

 The cuisine fell short for me slightly. While it wasn’t poor quality, it could have been better. I desired a larger, crisper salad. The primary dish lacked sufficient portions as well. Additionally, I expected extra servings of dessert. However, whatever was served turned out quite satisfactory.


 However, the treats available in the galley were up for grabs, and the afternoon tea was particularly charming — exactly what I needed.


 However, let’s discuss the service. Virgin Atlantic consistently excels with its cabin crew, which was the highlight of my flight. The staff were incredibly enjoyable and welcoming. They made each passenger feel extra special. Indeed, they represent the true gem within Virgin Atlantic.

 After landing at JFK, Nicky tells his viewers in conclusion: 'That flight was pretty brilliant. Well done, Virgin Atlantic. I found the seat to be super comfortable. I liked the adjustable headrest. I liked the adjustable tray table. The IFE was brilliant. The Wi-Fi was a bit dodge. But overall, a great place to be sitting for six or seven hours.


 'The food was the slight let-down for me. It wasn't bad but it should have been more. I wanted a bigger, fresher salad. I wanted a bit more in the main meal. A bit more of a dessert. But what was there was pretty good.


 'But then [there were] the snacks they had in the galley for the taking and the afternoon tea was really cute - and really hit the spot.


 'But let's talk about service. Virgin Atlantic brings it every single time with its cabin crew. And that's what made this flight for me. The crew were so fun, so friendly. They made everybody feel that little bit special. They really are the jewel in Virgin Atlantic's crown.'

 Liam was impressed by the 'fresh and clean' cabin, the 'comfortable and customizable' headrest, and the 'adequate' legroom.


 He informed MailOnline Travel that the Wi-Fi was more affordable compared to Virgin’s pricing (£14.99 versus £20.99). Additionally, he mentioned that the cuisine was ‘excellent’ and praised the cabin crew for their outstanding service.


 Any downsides?


 A few issues were noted – the seating felt outdated, the in-flight entertainment screen seemed antiquated, and the wooden utensils failed to make an impression.

 The pillow also did not receive any praise, with Liam calling it 'slim.'


 In the video, following his arrival in the U.S., Liam remarks: "Overall, it turned out to be quite a reliable economy class journey. Today, they exceeded expectations by making sure I felt at home. Food and drinks arrived promptly; this wasn’t merely about putting on smiles for customers. Their personal touch remained consistent from start to finish."


 The seating seems somewhat dated, especially the IFE system on the 777. However, overall, I was quite pleased — plus, they arrived at our destination 10 minutes ahead of schedule. It was remarkably efficient and swift.

 Nicky mentioned that his portion could have been larger and pointed out that the Wi-Fi cost more than the BA service.


 Upon arriving at JFK, Nicky concludes by telling his audience: "That flight was quite impressive. Kudos to Virgin Atlantic! I found my seat extremely comfy. Loved the adjustable headrest. Also enjoyed the flexible tray table. The inflight entertainment system was fantastic. However, the internet connection could have been better. All things considered, it’s definitely a nice spot to sit through those long six or seven-hour flights."


 The food slightly disappointed me. It wasn’t terrible, yet it could have been better. I craved a larger, fresher salad. The primary dish lacked quantity as well. Similarly, the dessert portion felt insufficient. However, whatever was served turned out quite decent.


 However, the treats available in the galley were up for grabs, and the afternoon tea was particularly charming — it truly satisfied my cravings.


 However, let’s discuss the service. Virgin Atlantic consistently delivers exceptional service through its cabin crew, which was the highlight of my flight experience. The staff members were incredibly cheerful and welcoming. Each passenger felt genuinely valued and special due to their efforts. In essence, they truly stand out as the pride and joy of Virgin Atlantic.
