 The Federal Aviation Administration reported that an Avelo Airlines aircraft, which departed from a New Hampshire airport, was targeted with a laser.


 The crew of Avelo Airlines flight 1170 reported encountering a blue laser illumination at approximately 9:40 p.m. on Friday, roughly 15 miles away from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, according to the FAA.

 Based on flight tracking information, the aircraft was en route to Concord, North Carolina. The FAA stated that no one was injured and local law enforcement agencies were informed.


 "From a safety standpoint, there’s truly no adequate preparation for such an event. While we receive training on managing weather conditions and challenging situations during crucial parts of flying, nothing can get us ready to cope with losing our vision, even if it’s only brief," stated commercial pilot Tom Pasquariello.


 12,840 laser strikes
 were reported by aviators in 2024, marking a three percent decline from 2023.


 "When you send it out into the night sky, or it increases in width, it can light up a whole cockpit," said Tom Kinton, an aviation expert.


 Anyone who shines a laser at an aircraft can face fines up to $11,000 per violation and can face local, state and federal criminal penalties.

 Nielsen Field came into existence in 1937 with roots firmly planted in civil and commercial domains. Initially, it wasn’t conceived as a military airbase. Instead, it was dedicated to Laurie Reuben Nielsen, a businessman from Manila. Born in New Zealand, he married an American woman. His vision included establishing an aviation training institution in Manila.


 Mr. Nielson managed to secure a substantial piece of land through leasing from the Ayala Hacienda in Makati. This hacienda belonged to the Ayala family.

 The family, who held significant wealth and power in the Philippines, owned land that was utilized for cultivating rice. The location of Nielson Field was situated fairly near to this area.

 The construction of the 42-hectare site was completed in just half a year. To expedite the building of the airport, the project utilized 80,000 gallons of asphalt and employed 1,000 laborers.


 The airport featured two runways along with an imposing control tower. Following its completion in 1937, it became the biggest and most well-equipped facility of its kind across Asia. During this period, there was significant demand for global air commerce and shipping.


 The recently built flight academy at the airstrip was named the American Far East School of Aviation. Two commercial carriers operated out of Nielsen; one was known as the Iloilo-Negros Express, and the second carrier was the Philippine Air Taxi Company. The latter evolved into what we now know as Philippine Airlines (PAL).


 As Japanese aggression persisted across Asia and Southeast Asia during the early 1940s, Mr. Nielsen's business endeavor shifted and relocated in October 1941 under the jurisdiction of the Far East Air Force (FEAF), which came under the command of the United States Armed Forces of the Far East (USAFFE).


 General Douglas MacArthur served as the Commander of USAFFE. Nielsen Field functioned as the base for FEAF. Upon his arrival at Nielsen Field on November 7, 1941, Major General Lewis Brereton took up his new role as the leader of FEAF.


 On December 10, 1941, Nielson Field suffered an attack from the Japanese forces. The facility faced considerable destruction as a result. Soon after, Mr. Nielson was apprehended by the Japanese and transported to the University of Santo Tomas, also known as the Santo Tomas Internment Camp (STIC).


 The STIC served as the internment site for American civilians during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Upon discovering that Mr. Nielson held British citizenship rather than being an American civilian, he was moved to Hong Kong. Sadly, his whereabouts remain unknown since then.


 Today, Nielson Field no longer stands. The previous runways of the airbase now form part of an active commercial and business district in Metro Manila known as the Ayala Triangle area in Makati.


 Parts of the former runways have been transformed into bustling city thoroughfares known as Ayala Avenue and Roxas Boulevard.


 The Nielson Air Traffic Control Tower remains intact to this day. It stands as the sole building from before World War II still extant in Makati. Over the years, the Nielson control tower has served various functions, such as housing a museum and operating as a restaurant.

 PARIS () - Airbus and Boeing are preparing the aerospace industry for sharp increases in output of the next generation of workhorse jets to some 100 a month each, as they explore lighter plastic materials and robotic assembly, industry sources said.

 Facing weak supply chains and a potentially lengthy wait for future engine developments, the world's two largest planemakers are years away from launching projects to replace their decades-old Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 series, which remain in demand.


 But both told a packed technical audience at a Paris composites fair this month that they were already making progress in researching what the succeeding generation of models could be made of - and in turn how fast they could be built.


 "The goal is to recommend the best approach to transition...(to) the next airplane programme," Randy Wilkerson, who represents Boeing in a NASA research project for high-capacity manufacturing called HiCAM, told the JEC World conference in Paris.


 The airplanes that future models would replace are built of aluminium under methods perfected over decades. But composites are being considered for their lighter weight and flowing shape.


 Already heavily used on larger jets like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, composites save fuel and emissions but currently need time-consuming handling in pressurised autoclave ovens.


 To meet the demand for much larger numbers of small jets, both planemakers are increasingly studying manufacturing based on novel materials like thermoplastics at faster speeds.


 Speakers said ongoing studies assume future production of 80 jets a month each for Airbus and Boeing: more than twice what Boeing is producing now, following a safety crisis, and higher than Airbus' repeatedly delayed target of 75 a month.


 However, sources told that both planemakers are telling the composites industry they want to go even further and be ready for speeds as high as 100 a month each, a blistering pace equivalent to one roughly 200-seat jet every few hours.


 Boeing and Airbus declined to comment.


 THERMOPLASTICS


 It's a major gamble for an industry that first used composites in the 1970s but never at such ambitious rates.


 Analysts say production capacity will be as important a battleground in tomorrow's jet industry as picking the right designs, as the West faces rising competition from China.


 Until now structural parts for jets like the 787 have been made of a type of composite known as thermoset, which maintains its shape and toughness once cured in autoclaves.


 Possible future techniques include an evolution of the existing production system with faster curing times. "It's a lower risk approach but has a lot of potential," Wilkerson said.


 Also in the mix is resin infusion - a technique typically used to make boats but which could be used to make automated production of some components without needing an autoclave.


 But increasingly, thermoplastics are causing a buzz in aerospace, according to delegates at the world's largest composites event, where Airbus, GKN and others showcased part of the world's largest thermoplastic fuselage structure.


 The advantage of thermoplastic is that it can be reheated and remoulded to produce a single, flowing aerodynamic shape.


 "You can melt it and reshape it in any way you like," said Lukas Raps of German Aerospace Centre DLR.


 Such parts can also be welded using advanced methods like ultrasound rather than attached with rivets, reducing weight.


 And they are less likely to need autoclaves - a major time and energy saving when contemplating large output increases.


 "Without a doubt, thermoplastic materials provide us with opportunities that we lack when working with thermosets," said York Roth, a prominent researcher at Airbus in Germany, during his address at the conference.


 Shifting from using physical titanium fasteners to welding on structural components might encounter certification challenges.


 Industry experts suggest that the following aircraft may incorporate a blend of methodologies instead of solely relying on a single technology.


 Although aerospace is a comparatively minor participant in composites, it exerts influence beyond its size when it comes to monetary worth and research capabilities.


 Officials emphasized that there were currently no imminent plans for introducing a new aircraft model, which experts suggest could potentially concern fatigued investors amid ongoing supply chain issues and instability at Boeing.


 "This demonstrator was not intended for flight, but it has been proven effective for maximising learning," Roth informed the attendees.

 What happened?


 A fire at an electrical substation in west London, about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from the airport, cut power to Heathrow Airport late on Thursday.

 Residents reported an explosion and a fireball just before midnight. The London Fire Brigade said a transformer holding 25,000 liters (5,000 gallons) of cooling oil caught fire. It said 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters brought the blaze under control after seven hours, but isolated hotspots were still alight 24 hours after the fire started.


 National Grid, which maintains energy infrastructure in Britain, said the blaze damaged equipment at the substation and cut power to 67,000 properties, including Heathrow. It said power was restored to all of them by Saturday morning.


 The “significant power outage” initially forced Heathrow officials to announce that the airport would be closed until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, but some flights began to resume on Friday evening.


 What caused the fire?


 Officials said there was no suggestion of foul play, but the cause is still under investigation. The fire brigade said its investigation would focus on the electrical distribution equipment at the substation.

 How was Heathrow affected?


 The closure disrupted the travel plans of around 200,000 people who were expected to travel through Heathrow on Friday. Heathrow advised passengers not to travel to the airport and to contact their airlines to rebook flights.


 With all takeoffs and landings canceled, the first impact was on dozens of long-haul flights from North America and Asia that were in the air when the airport was shut down. Some were forced to turn around, while others were diverted to airports around the United Kingdom and Europe.

 About 4,000 tons of cargo were also stranded by the closure, according to Anita Mendiratta, an aviation and leadership consultant.


 How long will the disruptions last?


 The disruptions are expected to last for days as airlines move stranded aircraft and flight crews back into position and work to accommodate passengers whose flights were canceled. Mendiratta estimated that it would take two to four days to clear all the backlogs.


 “This is an extreme situation where the entire aviation ecosystem is impacted,” she said.


 “There will be two things that will be happening as a priority No. 1. First is airport operations and understanding, from an electrical system point of view, what has been impacted, if anything,” she said. “Did anything short out, for instance? What needs to be reactivated? And then how do you literally turn the airport back on again?"


 How big is Heathrow?


 Heathrow was Europe’s busiest airport last year, with 83.6 million passengers traveling through it. Its closure will have far-reaching impacts because it's a major hub for connecting flights to cities throughout the U.K. and around the world, as well as for travel to London.

 Yes. Five other air hubs in southeastern England identify themselves as London airports, but they are much smaller than Heathrow. London Gatwick, Britain’s second-biggest airport, handled 43.2 million passengers last year. It's located in the town of Crawley, 28 miles (45 kilometers) south of London.


 What’s the bigger picture?


 The fire raises concerns about the U.K.’s ability to withstand attacks or natural disasters that damage critical infrastructure such as communications and power networks, analysts said.


 The incident is particularly worrisome given recent comments by Britain’s security services that Russia is conducting a reckless
 campaign of sabotage across Europe
 , said Alan Mendoza, the executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, a London-based security think tank.


 “The U.K.’s critical national infrastructure is not sufficiently hardened for anywhere near the level it would need to be at to give us confidence this won’t happen again,” he said. “I mean, if one fire can shut down Heathrow’s primary systems ... it tells you something’s badly wrong with our system of management of such disasters.”

 Robin Potter, an expert on resilience at London-based think tank Chatham House, said that successive governments have been slow to respond to repeated recommendations from the National Infrastructure Commission to strengthen the ability of Britain’s power, communications, transport and water networks to withstand major shocks.

 According to reports from the South China Morning Post, COMAC (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China) recently disclosed plans for the C949 – a supersonic aircraft capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 1.6. This new model would be able to travel faster and farther compared to the iconic Concorde, as mentioned in an academic publication.


 The document stated that the project aimed for a 50 percent increase in range compared to the Concorde and was engineered to ensure the aircraft operates as silently as a hair dryer’s noise level.


 The curved planform of the fuselage is designed to mitigate shockwaves, thereby postponing intense sonic booms that might otherwise be generated by the aircraft, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

 Johnson stated that it still needs to be established if being overweight contributed to the incident. The flight path was expected to have icing conditions, and there was snowfall with occasional freezing rain in Nome, as mentioned by him. Authorities are working to ascertain which details about weather conditions reached the pilot before takeoff, what data he possessed during departure, and whether icy circumstances prevailed at where the aircraft crashed, according to his comments.


 An email requesting comments sent to Bering Air has not been promptly responded to as of yet.


 In remote areas of Alaska, weather frequently plays a significant role, and although air travel is routine for many residents, it can be perilous, according to Whitney Power Wilson, an aviation accident litigation attorney and pilot based in Anchorage.


 Icing should be a concern for every pilot, particularly for those flying smaller planes and those often operating under icy conditions," she stated. "The weight of an aircraft, along with the reality of encountering ice, must be treated with seriousness as the outcomes could be devastating.


 Investigations included examining the airplane’s altitude. The region they were concerned with had conditions conducive to moderate icing from altitudes of 2,000 feet (610 meters) up to 8,000 feet (2,438 meters). This zone posed significant hazards for lighter aircraft as well, according to statements made by NTSB Chairperson Jennifer Homendy during a press briefing held in Nome recently.


 The contact was severed soon after air traffic control informed the pilot that the runway in Nome would be shut down for approximately 15 minutes for de-icing purposes, according to the report.


 The controller mentioned that if the pilot wished to 'ease up a bit' to avoid reaching before the runway was back in service, that would be acceptable, according to the report. The pilot agreed with this suggestion.


 The pilot manual also states that maintaining an airspeed of 95 knots is necessary when flying in icing conditions provided that the de-icing equipment is completely operational.


 Approximately three minutes after being instructed to descend to 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) as deemed appropriate by the pilot, the autopilot disconnected when the aircraft was traveling at 99 knots. It rapidly decreased to 70 knots shortly thereafter and had reached around 3,100 feet (945 meters). According to the report, the last satellite tracking information received was just under a minute later, specifically at 3:20 p.m., with the plane at an elevation of only 200 feet.


 According to the report, the de-icing system on the wings and tail of the five-year-old turboprop aircraft was engineered to stop ice buildup.


 The operator mentioned that the amount of deicing fluid was verified during every preflight check. Although the pilot must confirm that enough fluid is present, there isn’t an obligation to document when it gets loaded onto the aircraft. An employee from the Unalakleet airport informed the pilot about the availability of the fluid; however, as per the report, the pilot stated that their tank was already full.


 The U.S. Coast Guard mentioned they did not receive any distress calls from the aircraft. Following a thorough search, the debris was located the next day floating on an ice drift. It was determined that both the pilot and all nine passengers had perished.

However, following the 1973 oil crisis, which caused oil prices to soar fourfold, running the 747 became financially unviable. Additionally, lacking substantial domestic routes hindered efforts to keep their planes full. By November 1978, they were serving only 65 destinations. Despite this, Pan Am continued operations for roughly ten more years until filing for bankruptcy in 1991.


 Despite its disappearance nearly twenty years ago, Pan Am continues to be held in such high regard that it inspired a 14-part TV series dramatizing its era, featuring Margot Robbie as an airline stewardess. The distinctive blue luggage adorned with the white globe emblem that Robbie carried still commands top dollar at auction houses.

 Pacific Southwest Airlines: 1949-1988

 Even though it may seem otherwise, air travel hasn’t ever been more affordable due to the emergence of budget airlines. Companies such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air trace their roots back to Southwest, which is currently the largest discount carrier in America. Interestingly enough, Southwest itself can attribute its beginnings to a California startup known as Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA). According to Herb Kelleher, who started Southwest, the creation of PSA played an essential role in his decision to establish Southwest. But what exactly made PSA significant and how did it leave such an impact?


 On May 6, 1949, it made its maiden flight. A rented Douglas DC-3 plane left San Diego Airport, formerly called Lindbergh Field, carrying 24 passengers to Oakland Airport with a stop at Hollywood Burbank Airport along the way. The company’s founder, Kenny Friedkin, capitalized on the fact that since they were an intra-California air carrier, they weren’t bound by U.S. federal price controls, which allowed them to reduce ticket costs.


 He provided nothing extra. There wasn’t a dedicated branded registration zone at airports, and luggage was measured with basic home scales. The service included just one travel class and utilized only one kind of airplane—an idea later adopted by every contemporary budget airline. Within its inaugural year, PSA became profitable.

In the following decade, the company went public, providing funds necessary for expansion through the use of Boeing 727s followed by Boeing 737 jetliners adorned with their distinctive orange, red, and white color scheme. Known for friendly service and competitive pricing—often just half that of competitors such as TWA—the carrier branded itself as "the world’s friendliest airline."


 In 1978, the U.S. Airline Deregulation Act removed federal oversight of ticket prices, which led to increased competition and expansion within the industry. Recognizing this shift, PSA expanded its reach outside of California, adding routes to cities such as Reno, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. To prepare for significant growth, PSA placed an order for specially adapted Lockheed L-1011 wide-body aircraft.


 In 1986, USAir, which would later be renamed US Airways, purchased the airline for $400 million. By 1988, PSA had been fully absorbed into the expanded company. However, the effective business strategy employed back then has become standard practice nowadays for short-distance airlines globally, even being adopted by certain companies like British Airways who might have benefited from understanding this approach earlier.

 Emirates: 1985-present
</h2>

 Three decades back, Emirates was an unfamiliar entity to most, and locating tiny Dubai on a globe was a challenge for many. During this period, British Airways stood at the pinnacle of global aviation, outpacing all competitors in terms of international passenger traffic. The transformation since then has been remarkable. Nowadays,

They have developed a hub-and-spoke system that has redirected the focal point of international air traffic from Europe towards the Middle East. Many travelers from Europe now use Dubai as their connecting point when heading to destinations like Australia, Asia, and Africa. Similarly, Chinese passengers often pass through Dubai on their way to various African countries. The airline handles such significant volumes of Indian passengers traveling through Dubai instead of taking nonstop flights from cities like Delhi or Mumbai that it has earned the nickname "India’s de facto national carrier."

 Clark has also accomplished the remarkable achievement of making passengers' favorite airplane his own. He has acquired over 120 Airbus A380 superjumbos and transformed them into Emirate’s signature feature by equipping first-class cabins with showers, setting up a spacious bar for business-class travelers, introducing an exceptional premium-economy section at the forward end of the plane, and maintaining a decent standard in the economy class. Travelers greatly appreciate these enhancements. In comparison, Emirates’ closest competitors have fewer than twelve A380s apiece.


 If that wasn't sufficient, Emirates has essentially built the emirate of Dubai almost alone. Many residents in Dubai jokingly say it’s "a city with an airline attached."

 The Flying Kangaroo has overcome what its CEO, Vanessa Hudson, refers to as "the tyranny of distance." The airline was an early adopter of ultralong-haul travel, offering 15-hour journeys from cities like Sydney and Melbourne to destinations such as Los Angeles, Dallas, and Johannesburg—while simultaneously boasting one of the strongest safety records within the aviation sector. Later, it initiated direct flights from Europe to Perth, introducing 17-hour routes connecting major European cities including London, Paris, and Rome with Perth.


 Now it is set to accomplish something that very few aviation experts believed could happen:
 begin 21-hour continuous service from London and New York to Sydney and Melbourne
 Starting in 2026, flight QF2 will depart from London early in the day and land in Sydney during the later part of the afternoon the next day. Meanwhile, QF1 will take off from Sydney in the evening and reach London the subsequent morning.

 Among the 34 passengers on board for Qantas' experimental direct flight from London to Sydney in 2019, I was fortunate enough to be present. This historic trip spanned 10 different time zones and crossed through 11 countries. Our route took us initially towards eastern Europe, traversing Russia, Kazakhstan, and China before we turned southeastward over the South China Sea toward Australia’s north coast near Darwin in the Northern Territory. Finally, we made our way down under the vast Australian sky.
 
 Captain Helen Trenerry joyfully declared upon entering what would become the second sunrise during this unprecedented voyage: "Congratulations! You have just joined an elite group known as The Rare and Secret Order of the Double Sunrise." She added with pride, "None others can claim to witness such a spectacle—two sunrises within one flight—and still reach their destination quicker than anyone else."


 In 2026, the inaugural fee-paying travelers will embark on a comparable journey aboard an Airbus A350 equipped with an additional fuel tank and reduced seating capacity to minimize weight. Hudson believes that first-class direct flights to Sydney will become the pinnacle of prestige in aviation — "the modern-day Concorde." Currently, she is determining just how exorbitant she can set the price point for this service. I’d wager around £20,000 for a round-trip ticket.

On October 4, 1958, BOAC’s De Havilland Comet 4 commenced flights from London to New York’sIdlewild Airport, which is now known as JFK. This marked the start of the transatlantic jet era. By the latter part of the 1950s, BOAC was boasting itself as the "worldwide airline," serving destinations across all continents excluding Antarctica.

He has bought more than 120 Airbus A380 superjumbos and made them Emirates’ calling card by installing showers for first-class passengers, a large bar for business-class fliers, a class-leading premium-economy cabin in the front nose cone, and a not-too-shabby economy. Passengers love the innovations. By contrast, Emirates’ nearest rivals operate no more than a dozen A380s each.


 If all that weren’t enough, Emirates has all but single-handedly created the city state of Dubai. Many locals in Dubai joke that it is “an airline with a city attached”.

 The Flying Kangaroo has conquered what Vanessa Hudson, its chief executive, calls “the tyranny of distance”. We headed east over northern Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan and China, and then south across the South China Sea, before making landfall near Darwin in the Northern Territory and crossing Australia. “You are now members of the Rare and Secret Order of the Double Sunrise,” announced Captain Helen Trenerry, as she flew Qantas flight 7879 into the second dawn of our record-breaking journey. “No one else has seen two sunrises in one flight and got to Sydney faster than you.”


 In 2026, the inaugural group of paying travelers will embark on a comparable journey aboard an Airbus A350 equipped with an additional fuel tank and reduced seating capacity to minimize overall weight. According to Hudson, traveling non-stop to Sydney in first class will become the pinnacle of prestige in aviation—akin to "the new Concorde."
