Each pile of discarded material has been assigned its own designation and appears strewn across the location in conical forms. During a scorching day in September, a group comprising engineers, chemists, and technicians tested various methods involving high temperatures, pressurized air, and chemical agents aimed at extracting copper from these refuse heaps.


 For a considerable period, we simply did not believe it was feasible to reclaim anything from here," stated Robert Pollock, the site manager for Morenci, as he looked upward at a refuse heap as large as a Manhattan skyscraper. "However, nowadays, with all this historic copper, we're setting our sights on retrieving it.


 Major players such as BHP Group, Antofagasta Plc, and Rio Tinto Group—with its Nuton division—are also advancing efforts to adopt sulfide leaching techniques. Several companies have partnered with emerging firms like Jetti Resources and Ceibo, entities that assert significant progress in this area. Given the diversity in geological compositions across various copper reserves, these corporations are tailoring distinct technologies suited for their specific mine sites.

 These businesses are concentrating on extracting copper from a challenging sulfide mineral known as chalcopyrite, often deemed hard to process or "leach." Jetti’s innovation seeks to leach these sulfides with minimal heating or crushing, processes that have generally made treating chalcopyrite so costly that it becomes impractically expensive.


 Ceibo, supported by BHP and now collaborating with Glencore Plc, employs a technique that rapidly oxidizes chalcopyrite ores via electrochemical processes. This leads to enhanced extraction yields within less time. According to the company, their method has achieved an over 75% success rate in extracting copper from chalcopyrite—substantially surpassing conventional leaching techniques.


 For many years, miners have processed the calcopyrite mineral to extract copper," explained Corby Anderson, who teaches at the Colorado School of Mines. "Copper hasn't simply been sealed inside some magical container. Nonetheless, current technologies aim to boost the extraction efficiency of copper from calcopyrite, a task that can be quite challenging.


 For years, Freeport-McMoRan has employed leaching techniques at the Morenci mine to extract lower-quality copper, but recently they have begun testing new chemical agents to access additional copper deposits located much further down within their discarded material heaps. Based in Phoenix, the firm has managed to recover 100,000 tons of copper through sulfide leaching thus far. Their objective is to increase this yield to 400,000 tons by 2030, which would be sufficient to supply wiring for over 4.3 million electric cars.


 "That's akin to the output of a significant copper mine anywhere," CEO Kathleen Quirk stated last year.

 Despite the promising outcomes from sulfide leaching tests, this does not ensure overall success. Companies face challenges when trying to demonstrate that their methods will work effectively on an industrial scale, and many hesitate before committing significant funds to these innovative procedures. In private discussions, certain mining firms have expressed doubts about the practicality of some technologies and have negotiated intensely regarding partnership agreements and rights ownership.


 At Escondida, a massive copper mine in Chile operated by BHP, the global mining corporation has been experimenting with various technologies to counteract the decline in copper quality that threatens to significantly reduce output over the coming years. According to their strategy, BHP anticipates potentially producing up to 55,000 tons of copper annually through the process of leaching.


 BHP is currently evaluating its proprietary technology along with systems from Nuton and Jetti. However, these technologies present significantly varied results. Jetti’s solution has lower installation and operational expenses but provides just a minor boost in recovery rates. In contrast, Nuton’s approach entails higher initial costs yet substantially enhances recovery yields. According to BHP, they intend to reach a conclusion following 2027.


 Freeport-McMoRan, which initially invested alongside BHP and Mitsubishi Corporation in Jetti, has distanced itself from the technology following its collaboration with the start-up at their El Abra mine in Chile. In an email responding to inquiries, they stated that they have ceased utilizing the company’s method as they focus on developing their own approach instead. Currently, Jetti’s technology is being employed for commercial purposes by Capstone Copper Corp. in the U.S.


 Jetti possesses a distinctive and proven commercial technology for processing primary sulfide ores," stated CEO John Slaven. "Our process involves treating run-of-mine materials without requiring heat, grinding, or permits, resulting in the production of 99.99% pure copper directly at the mining location, generating zero tailings and using less water. Deployment can be completed within twelve months, providing substantial financial benefits.

 "It will ultimately boil down to the economics," Anderson stated, adding that he is aware of earlier attempts to enhance copper recovery via sulfide leaching. Though these methods were technically possible, they did not prove to be economically practical.


 Freeport’s leaching initiative aligns with a key objective central to Trump’s critical minerals strategy: generating employment opportunities.


 The decrease in American mining and mineral processing led to job losses as these roles shifted to foreign nations where they could be performed more cheaply. In rural areas of the Southwest, significant advancements in technology are essential for sustaining older mines.


 Pollock, who serves as the site manager for Morenci, spent his childhood in Clifton, which is about 4 miles (6 kilometers) away from Morenci in Arizona. This town was established during the late 1800s primarily to accommodate the miners and their families working at the nearby mine. Back then, mules were used to transport crates filled with ore up the mine’s dusty inclines. Similar to many areas around it, this community's economic well-being soon became deeply intertwined with the fortunes of the mining industry.


 Currently, Morenci contributes to approximately 13,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities and generates over $1.5 billion in overall economic advantages across the state, as reported by Freeport.


 “I find it truly remarkable to see how much this place has transformed over the years,” stated Pollock. “ Undertaking this work ensures that the mine will continue to be operational for many more years to come.”

 PARIS () - Airbus and Boeing are preparing the aerospace industry for sharp increases in output of the next generation of workhorse jets to some 100 a month each, as they explore lighter plastic materials and robotic assembly, industry sources said.

 Facing weak supply chains and a potentially lengthy wait for future engine developments, the world's two largest planemakers are years away from launching projects to replace their decades-old Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 series, which remain in demand.


 But both told a packed technical audience at a Paris composites fair this month that they were already making progress in researching what the succeeding generation of models could be made of - and in turn how fast they could be built.


 "The goal is to recommend the best approach to transition...(to) the next airplane programme," Randy Wilkerson, who represents Boeing in a NASA research project for high-capacity manufacturing called HiCAM, told the JEC World conference in Paris.


 The airplanes that future models would replace are built of aluminium under methods perfected over decades. But composites are being considered for their lighter weight and flowing shape.


 Already heavily used on larger jets like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, composites save fuel and emissions but currently need time-consuming handling in pressurised autoclave ovens.


 To meet the demand for much larger numbers of small jets, both planemakers are increasingly studying manufacturing based on novel materials like thermoplastics at faster speeds.


 Speakers said ongoing studies assume future production of 80 jets a month each for Airbus and Boeing: more than twice what Boeing is producing now, following a safety crisis, and higher than Airbus' repeatedly delayed target of 75 a month.


 However, sources told that both planemakers are telling the composites industry they want to go even further and be ready for speeds as high as 100 a month each, a blistering pace equivalent to one roughly 200-seat jet every few hours.


 Boeing and Airbus declined to comment.


 THERMOPLASTICS


 It's a major gamble for an industry that first used composites in the 1970s but never at such ambitious rates.


 Analysts say production capacity will be as important a battleground in tomorrow's jet industry as picking the right designs, as the West faces rising competition from China.


 Until now structural parts for jets like the 787 have been made of a type of composite known as thermoset, which maintains its shape and toughness once cured in autoclaves.


 Possible future techniques include an evolution of the existing production system with faster curing times. "It's a lower risk approach but has a lot of potential," Wilkerson said.


 Also in the mix is resin infusion - a technique typically used to make boats but which could be used to make automated production of some components without needing an autoclave.


 But increasingly, thermoplastics are causing a buzz in aerospace, according to delegates at the world's largest composites event, where Airbus, GKN and others showcased part of the world's largest thermoplastic fuselage structure.


 The advantage of thermoplastic is that it can be reheated and remoulded to produce a single, flowing aerodynamic shape.


 "You can melt it and reshape it in any way you like," said Lukas Raps of German Aerospace Centre DLR.


 Such parts can also be welded using advanced methods like ultrasound rather than attached with rivets, reducing weight.


 And they are less likely to need autoclaves - a major time and energy saving when contemplating large output increases.


 "Without a doubt, thermoplastic materials provide us with opportunities that we lack when working with thermosets," said York Roth, a prominent researcher at Airbus in Germany, during his address at the conference.


 Shifting from using physical titanium fasteners to welding on structural components might encounter certification challenges.


 Industry experts suggest that the following aircraft may incorporate a blend of methodologies instead of solely relying on a single technology.


 Although aerospace is a comparatively minor participant in composites, it exerts influence beyond its size when it comes to monetary worth and research capabilities.


 Officials emphasized that there were currently no imminent plans for introducing a new aircraft model, which experts suggest could potentially concern fatigued investors amid ongoing supply chain issues and instability at Boeing.


 "This demonstrator was not intended for flight, but it has been proven effective for maximising learning," Roth informed the attendees.

In what could be a big boost for the Indian automotive industry, Toyota has reportedly decided to set up a Research and Development (R&D) facility in the country. The Japanese auto giant will be establishing the new R&D through its Indian subsidiary which has been operational for more than two and a half decades.

 , this R&D centre will be located in Bengaluru close to Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Bidadi. The report says that this R&D facility will come into operation by 2027 and will be Toyota’s third such unit in the APAC region after Thailand and China. Toyota’s new R&D centre will generate employment to 2,000 workers, expanding operations with an additional 3,000 engineers over the next 2 years.


 Initially catering to the demand of the Indian market, the R&D centre will eventually focus on the needs of the global automotive market. This could potentially turn India into the global hub for Toyota’s R&D and manufacturing. Going forward, this new R&D centre will focus on developing models for regions including the Middle East, East Asia, and Oceania.

 한편, 한화에어로스페이스는 지난 20일 글로벌 방산·조선해양·우주항공 분야의 경쟁력 강화를 위해 3조6000억원 규모의 유상증자를 추진하기로 했다. 이번에 확보한 자금은 △해외 생산 확대 △해양방산 및 조선해양 투자 △항공우주 기술 개발 등에 투입된다.

 Have you ever pondered where automobiles are manufactured? In past decades, car production occurred at facilities situated within the same nation as the automaker. Brands such as those from America
 Ford
 And General Motors manufactured most of their vehicles in the U.S., whereas Japanese brands like
 Honda
 and
 Toyota
 constructed their facilities in Japan, and so forth. However, nowadays, the automotive sector is genuinely international, sourcing thousands of components from various countries and featuring brands with manufacturing sites across the globe.


 Possible import duties might have direct or indirect impacts on the manufacturing locations and processes for automobiles, as well as influence what American buyers will shell out for a brand-new car.  A significant number of our test vehicles were assembled in their respective brands' home countries—an example would be a BMW manufactured in Germany or a Hyundai produced in South Korea. However, despite this localization, the production processes often span several nations, as key parts such as engines are transported internationally, crossing both borders and seas. Our examples include models made in California.

Are US Tariffs Sparking a Manufacturing Renaissance in Canada?

 Three terms that have become frequently seen on Canadian store shelves since Donald Trump’s tariffs initiated a trade dispute with the U.S.'s neighbor to the north.


 In Canada, economic actions taken against it have sparked a surge of patriotic sentiment. Some consumers and business owners are choosing to boycott American goods as part of this response.


 Other companies operating in the US must decide whether to endure the current uncertainties or relocate their businesses domestically.


 "At present, I feel somewhat irritated. I am not inclined to put money into U.S. firms," states Joanna Goodman, who owns Au Lit Fine Linens, aToronto-based business dealing with bedding and nightwear.


 "It’s like putting all your eggs in one basket. Currently, this basket is both dangerously careless and unstable," she goes on to say.


 During a tour of one of her company’s two locations within a large warehouse, Ms. Goodman points out meticulously decorated beds, mannequins wearing luxurious silk pajamas, and rows of fragrant candles — nearly all produced in Canada.


 However, one-fifth of the inventory at present originates from the US. Ms. Goodman promptly emphasizes, “observe the size of the store; thus, even 20 percent constitutes a significant amount.”


 "She mentions that she has an extensive stock of American brands that she’s been associated with for two decades and isn’t planning to discard them." She adds, “The real query is whether I’ll place another order.”


 To demonstrate Au Lit Fine Linens' dedication to Canadian manufacturers, their stores now prominently feature products that are manufactured in Canada. This emphasis is also reflected on their website with a dedicated “shop all made in Canada” section and includes the phrase “made right here at home.”


 Amidst Houthi assaults in the Red Sea and the conflict in Ukraine, recent global occurrences have led to an emerging trend known as reshoring.


 Repatriating business processes to domestic territories marks the opposite of offshoring.

 The newly appointed Canadian Senator, Sandra Pupatello, states that bringing jobs back to Canada is "clearly necessary" for providing support.


 Pupatello, who formerly served as Ontario's Minister of Economic Development and Trade, highlights the Covid-19 pandemic, during which norms of trade were essentially discarded.


 She particularly mentions the instance of US-based mask maker 3M facing pressure from the White House in 2020.

 At that instant, Pupatello pondered, “We must brace ourselves for the worst.”


 Soon afterward, she founded Reshoring Canada, a nonpartisan organization that pushes for a stronger and more reliable supply chain within Canada.


 Pupatello states: "If things get difficult, Canada will be on its own. Knowing this, let’s prepare accordingly."

 However, circumstances might be shifting now.


 Since founding his company Rainhouse Manufacturing Canada in 2001, Ray Brougham has been attempting to break into the Canadian automotive production market. The business, located in British Columbia, produces components for various sectors.


 The automotive sector in North America has interconnected supply chains allowing components to traverse the boundaries between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada numerous times prior to a car being fully assembled.


 President Donald Trump stated that he would momentarily exempt U.S. automakers from the newly implemented 25% import duty on goods coming from Canada and Mexico, only one day following the announcement of these tariffs in March.


 However, under the threat of a trade war, Mr. Brougham mentions that he has established "positive communication" with a major Canadian automotive parts firm for the very first time. “Out of nowhere, they have shown interest in collaborating more closely with other Canadian businesses.”


 For Mr. Brougham and others, the advantages of bringing manufacturing back home are evident. This shift can provide support for smaller firms that have found it hard to match the prices set by foreign producers, guarantee more equitable paychecks, and reduce the environmental impact associated with lower levels of import and export activities.


 Other individuals, such as Graham Markham who leads a food industry supplier, think this initiative revolves around enhancing the worth of goods that Canada is already manufacturing.


 His company, New Protein International based in Canada, is presently building Canada's inaugural soy protein production facility in southwestern Ontario, only a few miles away from the U.S. border.

 fourth-largest exporter
 Of this harvest, however, much of it undergoes processing abroad.


 Mr. Markham states, "We do not transform those value-added ingredients into even more valuable components within our own country."


 From crucial minerals and uranium to timber and soybeans, he contends that now is the time for transformation.


 For many years, Canada has excelled as a major provider of natural resources globally. The current challenge lies in retaining domestic job growth and fostering innovation through local processing of these materials instead of just exporting them.

 Therefore, can manufacturing begin returning to Canada? According to economist Randall Bartlett, it’s still too soon to determine.


 "Much of what we see regarding the actual restructuring and domestic relocation of supply chains appears exaggerated," states Mr. Bartlett, who serves as the senior director for Canadian economics at Quebec’s Desjardins Group.


 I believe we have seen some progress towards reshoring, however, the amount of discussion about it seems much greater than the actual restoration of manufacturing capabilities.


 There are significant obstacles as well.


 For instance, the deeply integrated automotive industry would take many years to disentangle. According to Mr. Bartlett, reshoring this industry would necessitate "a massive investment totaling tens of hundreds of billions of dollars from both private and public sectors" to become feasible.


 Next comes the truth about international commerce.


 Mr. Bartlett suggests that since certain nations excel at manufacturing specific goods compared to others, Canada should consider broadening its range of trading partners instead of fully embracing reshoring initiatives.


 He argues that Canada ought to concentrate on "sectors wherein we possess a competitive edge," mentioning specifically the realms of renewable energy as well as the refining of steel and aluminum. It’s worth noting that these particular metals—steel and aluminum—are currently subject to a 25% tariff when sent for export to the U.S.


 At Au Lit Fine Linens in Toronto, when Joanna Goodman enters the large storage area, she hears cardboard boxes being sealed up.
