 INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)—A significant financial commitment is heading to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, symbolizing both an important commemoration and a fresh start.


 The
 MLK Gateway Project
 seeks to enhance the southern section of the park. This $6.8 million initiative will introduce a fresh plaza, improved pathways, enhanced horticulture features, and an extension of the Landmark for Peace Memorial. Spanning across 14 acres, this recreational area was founded in 1961.


 This signifies a great deal and will carry this park forward through many generations. I'm incredibly thrilled," stated Elizabeth Durden, a local resident. "I am eagerly anticipating what lies ahead for this park.


 The ceremony held on Friday coincides with the 57th anniversary of Robert Kennedy's address at the park, where he announced the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968. Back then, Elizabeth Durden was merely a young girl perched atop her father’s shoulders as she listened to Kennedy speak.


 When he began informing everyone about Dr. King’s assassination, people were sobbing, and it was quite an impactful moment," Durden stated. "It seemed surreal. We were all stunned since my parents understood what happened, but for me, it was confusing—I didn’t grasp the political implications.


 From Durden's perspective, having the ability to stand in the park years down the line and envisioning its full potential provides her with optimism for a brighter and more inclusive tomorrow.


 They're undertaking various construction projects in this region," Durden stated. "This includes new homes and multiple investments within the community. Therefore, everything will work out well provided everyone unites and supports one another.


 Ensuring safety is a key focus, as they plan to install additional lighting and surveillance cameras across the entire park area.


 “When it comes to safety, this issue will be present everywhere,” Durden stated. “This isn’t limited to our neighborhood or impoverished areas; it’s also found in Carmel and elsewhere. Being proactive means staying alert and refusing to accept it. As a community, we won’t allow such behavior here.”


 The construction of the project is anticipated to be finished by 2026.

The scheme includes installation of meters along with full cost recovery through volume-based pricing.
 
 
 Authorities from the water supply division reported that 22 projects have been finalized under the initiative, resulting in 1,08,755 new connections being issued. This represents a 24% increase over the targeted number set by the program.

 up and running
 Saturday and airlines worked to clear the backlog after a fire at a nearby electricity substation
 knocked out power to Europe's busiest airport
 , disrupting travel plans for hundreds of thousands of people around the world.


 The airport said it had made space for extra flights, but it is expected to take days to get stranded passengers to their destinations and displaced aircraft into the proper locations.


 Here's a look at what happened and its
 impact on air travel
 .


 What happened?


 A fire at an electrical substation in west London, about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from the airport, cut power to Heathrow Airport late on Thursday.

 Residents reported an explosion and a fireball just before midnight. The London Fire Brigade said a transformer holding 25,000 liters (5,000 gallons) of cooling oil caught fire. It said 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters brought the blaze under control after seven hours, but isolated hotspots were still alight 24 hours after the fire started.


 National Grid, which maintains energy infrastructure in Britain, said the blaze damaged equipment at the substation and cut power to 67,000 properties, including Heathrow. It said power was restored to all of them by Saturday morning.


 The “significant power outage” initially forced Heathrow officials to announce that the airport would be closed until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, but some flights began to resume on Friday evening.


 What caused the fire?


 Officials said there was no suggestion of foul play, but the cause is still under investigation. The fire brigade said its investigation would focus on the electrical distribution equipment at the substation.

 Even so, London's Metropolitan Police Service said counterterrorism detectives were leading the investigation because of the fire's impact on critical national infrastructure.

 Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said it was "an unprecedented event.”


 “Obviously, with any incident like this we will want to understand why it happened and what if any lessons it has for our infrastructure,” he told Sky News.


 How was Heathrow affected?


 The closure disrupted the travel plans of around 200,000 people who were expected to travel through Heathrow on Friday. Heathrow advised passengers not to travel to the airport and to contact their airlines to rebook flights.


 With all takeoffs and landings canceled, the first impact was on dozens of long-haul flights from North America and Asia that were in the air when the airport was shut down. Some were forced to turn around, while others were diverted to airports around the United Kingdom and Europe.

 Heathrow-bound aircraft landed at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam; Shannon Airport in western Ireland; Glasgow, Scotland; Manchester, England; Charles de Gaulle in Paris; Lyon, France; and Frankfurt, Germany, among others.


 About 4,000 tons of cargo were also stranded by the closure, according to Anita Mendiratta, an aviation and leadership consultant.


 How long will the disruptions last?


 The disruptions are expected to last for days as airlines move stranded aircraft and flight crews back into position and work to accommodate passengers whose flights were canceled. Mendiratta estimated that it would take two to four days to clear all the backlogs.


 “This is an extreme situation where the entire aviation ecosystem is impacted,” she said.


 “There will be two things that will be happening as a priority No. 1. First is airport operations and understanding, from an electrical system point of view, what has been impacted, if anything,” she said. “Did anything short out, for instance? What needs to be reactivated? And then how do you literally turn the airport back on again?"


 How big is Heathrow?


 Heathrow was Europe’s busiest airport last year, with 83.6 million passengers traveling through it. Its closure will have far-reaching impacts because it's a major hub for connecting flights to cities throughout the U.K. and around the world, as well as for travel to London.

 Does London have other airports?


 Yes. Five other air hubs in southeastern England identify themselves as London airports, but they are much smaller than Heathrow. London Gatwick, Britain’s second-biggest airport, handled 43.2 million passengers last year. It's located in the town of Crawley, 28 miles (45 kilometers) south of London.


 What’s the bigger picture?


 The fire raises concerns about the U.K.’s ability to withstand attacks or natural disasters that damage critical infrastructure such as communications and power networks, analysts said.


 The incident is particularly worrisome given recent comments by Britain’s security services that Russia is conducting a reckless
 campaign of sabotage across Europe
 , said Alan Mendoza, the executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, a London-based security think tank.


 “The U.K.’s critical national infrastructure is not sufficiently hardened for anywhere near the level it would need to be at to give us confidence this won’t happen again,” he said. “I mean, if one fire can shut down Heathrow’s primary systems ... it tells you something’s badly wrong with our system of management of such disasters.”

 Robin Potter, an expert on resilience at London-based think tank Chatham House, said that successive governments have been slow to respond to repeated recommendations from the National Infrastructure Commission to strengthen the ability of Britain’s power, communications, transport and water networks to withstand major shocks.

 “We still have yet to see a kind of clear response from the government to those recommendations,” he said. “And we hope that maybe in the government’s upcoming resilience review, which we expect will be published at some point this year, it might seek to address some of those questions.”


 Heathrow defended its response. Its CEO Thomas Woldbye said “the same would happen in other airports” faced with a similar fire.

 The proposal isn’t new, but it was once considered impossible due to the length and amount of money needed to construct it.


 Elon Musk
 has also chimed in on the idea – writing on X that his company, The Boring Company, could complete a transatlantic tunnel for ‘1000 times less money’.


 Recent developments in technology ranging from vacuum tube technologies and pressurised vehicles mean the journey could eventually become reality, albeit with a large price tag.


 Estimates of the construction costs of a tunnel running through the Atlantic Ocean have topped £15 trillion.


 If the ideas for the project eventually go forward, it could mean Londoners could hop on a train to New York and get across the pond in just one hour.

 부산항선은 영도선, 우암감만선과 북항재개발 구간에 포함된 C베이(C-Bay)선을 통합해 조정한 노선이다. 영도선과 우암감만선은 경제성이 부족해 추진이 지지부진했는데, 3개 노선을 통합해 건설과 운영 효율성을 높이는 방식으로 사업성을 확보했다.


 부산항선은 영도구 태종대를 시점으로 한국해양대, 중앙역(1호선), 북항재개발지구, 범일역(1호선), 문현역(2호선), 우암동과 감만동, 용호동 입구를 거쳐 경성대·부경대역(2호선)까지 연결된다. 총길이 24.21km, 정거장은 41곳이다. 총사업비는 7240억 원으로 예상된다.


 차량 시스템은 친환경 수소연료전지 방식에 공중에 전력을 공급하는 전선이 없는 무가선 트램(노면전차)을 도입한다.


 시는 부산항선을 곧 확정될 '제2차 부산시 도시철도망 구축 계획(2026~2035년)'에 최우선 사업으로 반영한 뒤 예비타당성조사를 신청할 예정이다.


 앞선 제1차(2016~2025년) 구축 계획에서 우선 순위 1위 사업이었던 하단~녹산선은 이미 건설이 본격화돼 1순위 자리가 비게 된다. 북항재개발 지역과 부산시민공원을 연결하는 C베이∼파크선은 2위, 영도선과 우암감만선은 10개 우선 순위 바깥의 후보 노선이었다.


 시는 부산항선을 통해 원도심 일대를 글로벌 허브 도시 부산의 중심지로 재탄생시킨다는 구상이다. 부산항, 북항재개발지구, 국제여객터미널, 부산역 등 관문 시설을 연결해 해안선을 관광 상품화하고, 부산도시철도 1호선과 2호선을 연결해 이동 시간도 단축된다.


 또, 부산항선을 주거, 업무, 쇼핑, 의료, 교육, 문화시설을 가까운 거리에서 이용할 수 있는 '15분 도시'의 플랫폼으로 조성하고, 트램 역사 중심의 복합개발과 보행자 우선 공간도 추진한다.

 Dubai, March 19, 2025 (WAM)—The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has finished quick upgrades on Sheikh Zayed Road aimed at boosting the effectiveness of the emirate’s transportation system. This initiative seeks to enhance overall traffic movement, decrease bottlenecks at crucial junctions, and expand roadway capacity. By ensuring more fluid traffic patterns and upholding stringent road safety protocols, these modifications reflect RTA's commitment to deploying cutting-edge traffic strategies across vital routes within Dubai.  This project encompassed the enlargement and improvement of significant spots alongside Sheikh Zayed Road, an essential economic artery flanked by residential zones and prominent financial and commercial hubs such as the Dubai International Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai Mall, among others like various multinational companies, banking institutions, investment firms, hotels, and recreational venues.  Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, stated: “RTA remains committed to enhancing traffic flow across Dubai, particularly on Sheikh Zayed Road. Through innovative enhancements and traffic solutions, we aim to provide a seamless and safe travel experience for all motorists and road users across the emirate.”


 Al Khzaimy stated, "The RTA has finished expanding the service road leading to the Financial Centre Metro Station towards Abu Dhabi, raising the lane count from three to four. This improvement has increased roadway capacity by 25%, enabling up to 3,200 cars per hour compared to the previous limit of 2,400 vehicles. Additionally, this update has alleviated congestion at the entry point, removed vehicular lines, and enhanced overall traffic movement, reducing travel time from five minutes down to merely two."


 He further noted that RTA had optimised the traffic merging distance between Al Khail Road and Financial Centre Street in the Dubai-bound direction. “Extending the merging distance has eased congestion and improved service levels, resulting in a 25% reduction in journey time along Sheikh Zayed Road—from four minutes to three minutes—ensuring smoother and more efficient traffic flow,” concluded Al Khzaimy.

 주요 철도 노선이 늘어나고 있는 부산 부전역 일대에 복합환승센터를 건립하기 위한 본격적인 움직임이 시작됐다. 중앙선과 동해선 열차가 새로 개통한 데다 경부선 KTX 정차를 추진하는 부전역에 복합환승센터가 들어서면 새로운 철도 중심지가 될 수 있다는 기대가 나온다.


 부산시는 부산진구 부전동 부전역 복합환승센터 건립을 위한 용역 추진에 나섰다고 30일 밝혔다. 복합환승센터 경제성을 평가하는 사전 타당성 조사를 진행하고, 사업 기본 구상 등을 수립하기 위해서다. 부산시는 용역 추진에 필요한 10억 원 규모 예산을 오는 6월 2차 추경에 편성하려 한다.


 복합환승센터는 대중교통 허브와 대형 상업 시설을 결합한 건물이다. 2016년 대구 동구에 문을 연 동대구역 복합환승센터처럼 고속·광역 철도역, 시외·고속버스 터미널, 백화점 등이 한 건물에 통합된 형태다.


 부전역 복합환승센터 개발은 10여 년 전 논의됐다가 보류된 바 있다. 부산시는 당시 정부 복합환승센터 시범 사업에 선정되면서 2013년 민간투자 사업으로 7070억 원을 들여 사업을 추진하려 했다. 부전역 일대 부지 7만 7780㎡에 연면적 27만 6800㎡, 지하 6층 지상 32층 규모 건물을 짓고 교통·상업·문화 거점으로 조성한다는 계획을 세웠다. 하지만 경제성 부족으로 비용을 부담할 민간사업자가 나타나지 않아 사업은 결국 무산됐다. 당시 용역에 따르면 KTX 승강장 설치 비용을 반영한 타당성 조사에서 비용 대비 편익(B/C) 값은 0.3으로 나타났다. 통상 철도 사업이 추진되기 위한 기준치는 0.8이다.

 부전역 복합환승센터 건립이 다시 수면 위로 떠오른 이유는 부전역이 부산 신흥 관문으로 떠올랐기 때문이다. 지난해 12월 부전역과 서울 청량리역을 잇는 중앙선이 개통됐고, 올해 1월부터 강원도 강릉행 동해선도 운행을 시작했다. 이후 부전역 하루 평균 이용객은 1만 명을 훌쩍 넘는다. 부산시 교통혁신과 관계자는 “10년 사이 부전역 위상과 주변 여건이 크게 달라져 복합환승센터 건립을 적극 추진하고 있다”며 “KTX 경부선 정차역 지정부터 용지 매입 등 여러 문제를 해소할 방안을 찾으려 한다”고 밝혔다.


 부전역은 또 내년 개통 예정인 부전마산선의 시·종착역이기도 하다. 부산시가 차기 도시철도망 구축 계획 1순위로 발표한 차세대 부산형 급행철도(BuTX) 구상에도 포함됐다.


 부산진구청도 낙후된 부전역 일대 개발을 촉진하고, 침체한 지역 관광과 상권을 살리기 위해 복합환승센터 건립에 팔을 걷고 나섰다. 우선 복합환승센터 건립이 동력을 얻으려면 부전역에 경부선 KTX 열차가 정차하는 게 첫 단추를 끼우는 일이라고 판단했다. 철도 이용객과 유동 인구가 크게 늘어 사업 경제성이 높아지고, 큰 비용을 부담하더라도 민간에서 사업에 참여할 가능성이 커지기 때문이다.


 이에 부산진구청은 부전역을 경부선 KTX 정차역으로 지정해 달라고 촉구하는 100만 주민 서명 운동을 전개하고 있다. 부산진구청에 따르면 다음 달까지 이어지는 서명에 현재까지 4만여 명이 참여했다. 서명 운동을 통해 올해 12월 결정되는 제5차 국가 철도망 구축 계획에 부전역을 경부선 KTX 정차역으로 지정하는 내용을 반영하는 게 목표다. 부산진구청 미래창조과 관계자는 “부전역 일대는 부산역보다 접근성이 좋은 지역이 많아 시민들이 대중교통을 편하게 이용할 수 있다”며 “부전시장은 물론 전포카페거리, 메디컬 스트리트 등 서면 상권과도 가까워 지역 경제 활성화도 기대된다”고 말했다.


 경부선 KTX 정차역 추진과 별개로 부전역 일대 환경 개선 작업도 진행된다. 부산진구청은 부전역 철도역과 도시철도역 사이의 보도블록과 조명을 정비하고, 관광 정보를 안내하는 키오스크 설치를 추진할 계획이다.

 The construction of a 120 km-long, four-lane greenfield and brownfield corridor from Patna to Sasaram in Bihar has been approved by the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA), at an expected cost of Rs 3,712.40 crore, a government statement said on March 28.


 The four-lane, access-controlled Patna-Arrah-Sasaram corridor, also known as NH-119A, will be developed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).


 "Currently, connectivity between Sasaram, Arrah and Patna relies on existing State Highways and takes 3-4 hours due to heavy congestion including in Arrah town. A greenfield corridor, along with 10.6 km of upgradation of existing brownfield highway, will be developed to reduce the increasing congestion, catering to the needs of densely built-up areas in places like Arrah, Grahini, Piro, Bikramganj, Mokar and Sasaram," the statement said.


 The corridor is expected to improve the connectivity between Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi, and Varanasi after completion, and will also generate 48 lakh man days worth of employment. The corridor is also expected open up news avenues of growth and development for the emerging regions in and around Patna, the statement said.

 The said project will also provide connectivity to the two airports as well, the Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna, and the upcoming Bihita airport, along with four major railway stations in Sasaram, Arrah, Danapur and Patna. The improved corridor will also provide better transport to the inland water terminal in Patna and improved direct access to the Patna Ring Road.


 The total land acquisition cost for the project is projected at Rs 718.97 crore.
