 頭上から両肩の下あたりまでキャノピーと呼ばれる透明の風防に覆われたコックピット（操縦席）。水色の空の中で視界が大きく開け、眼下に群青色の日向灘が広がっていた。


 Ｆ１５の最高速度はマッハ約２・５（音速の約２・５倍）だが、燃費を考慮し、時速８００キロで飛ぶ。首を回して後方を見ると、数分前に離陸したばかりの基地の滑走路がどんどん小さくなっていった。


 Ｆ１５は１人乗りだが、教育部隊では教官も搭乗する２人乗りの機体を使う。記者は第２３飛行隊長の外川裕之２佐（４６）が操縦かんを握るＦ１５の後席に座り、訓練生の小川洋介２尉（２７）が乗るもう１機のＦ１５とともに、宮崎県沖約１００キロの上空約６０００メートルに設定された訓練空域に向かった。


 突然、機体の前後を軸にして機体がくるりと時計回りに９０度回転し、右肩を下にした状態になった。体をシートベルトでしっかりと固定されながら大きく傾いた。数秒後に機体が水平に戻ったときには平衡感覚が乱れ、乗り物酔いを感じ始めた。


 戦闘機は高速で縦や横、斜めに急旋回する。そのたびに体重の何倍もの重力加速度（Ｇ）がかかり、体を座席に押さえつけられた。


 同時に、装着した耐Ｇスーツが膨らんで太ももや下腹を空気圧で締め上げる。脳に強制的に血液を送るためだ。これがなければ、目は開いているのに視野が暗くなる「グレーアウト」に陥る。全く見えなくなる「ブラックアウト」になる危険もある。

 荷重５００キロ以上
</h3>

 「ドッグファイト」と呼ばれる戦闘機同士が対戦する訓練が始まった。小川２尉のＦ１５が守備側となって、敵役となった記者が乗るＦ１５に対応する想定だ。


 「強いＧがかかりますよ」。前席の外川２佐から呼びかけられ、コックピット両側に付いている取っ手をしっかりと握った。


 機体が急旋回を始めると、体がどんどん重くなる。首を動かすことさえできない。視線だけをキャノピーの外に向ける。ただ、どの方向にどんな姿勢で飛んでいるのか、理解する余裕すらなかった。


 この訓練では最大７・５Ｇがかかっていた。体重７０キロの記者に対し、５００キロ以上の重さがのしかかったことになる。耐Ｇスーツの膨らみに耐えるため腹に力を入れており、まともに息ができない。パイロットはこんな状態で瞬時の状況判断と機体の操縦を求められるのか――。


 左斜め下方向に旋回した時、記者が乗ったＦ１５に追われる小川２尉の機体が視界に小さく入った。その機体からオレンジ色の光が４発放たれ、後方に流れた。自機に飛来する赤外線誘導ミサイルをかわすためのおとりとして出す「フレア（熱源）」だ。


 フレアは相手に警告の意思を伝える手段にもなる。昨年９月に北海道周辺でロシア軍機が３時間のうちに３回も領空侵犯した時には、緊急発進（スクランブル）した空自戦闘機が初めてフレアを使って警告した。


 飛行時間は６２分間。基地に着陸した時には冷や汗もすっかり乾き、吐き気と全身の筋肉のこわばりでぐったりしていた。

 闘志としなやかさ
</h3>

 戦闘機のパイロットは空自隊員の中で素質を見極められて選び抜かれた者たちだ。


 練習機で基本操縦を学んだ後、第４世代機の「Ｆ１５」課程（宮崎・新田原基地）と「Ｆ２」課程（宮城・松島基地）、さらには最新の第５世代機の「Ｆ３５」課程（イタリア）に分かれて専門的な訓練を受ける。第５世代機はレーダーに映りにくい「ステルス性」に優れた点が特徴だ。


 機種ごとの課程を終えると全国７か所の基地に拠点を置く戦闘機部隊に配属される。


 主要な任務が、対領空侵犯措置でのスクランブルだ。


 昨年８月には長崎県沖の上空で中国軍機が初めて領空侵犯した。


 Ｆ１５パイロット出身の内倉浩昭・航空幕僚長は直後の定例記者会見で、「海上では船舶に対して放水や体当たりといった物理的手段があるが、航空機の物理的手段には武器の使用しかない。結果的に撃墜となることがほぼ確実だ」と語り、緊迫した状況での対応の難しさを説明した。


 領空は国際法上、その国が排他的な主権を持つ。政府は対領空侵犯措置での武器使用基準について、正当防衛などの場合に限ると厳格に定める。パイロットが航空管制やレーダーなど地上部隊と連携して対応する。


 教官陣を束ねる外川２佐はパイロットに求める資質として「闘志」とともに、「どんな状況でも任務を完遂して基地に無事に戻るしなやかさ」を挙げた。


 小川２尉は「任務をやり遂げるために、知識も技術も貪欲に追求していきたい」と熱っぽく語った。

Can Turkey's 'Steel Dome' Thwart Israel in Syria?

 Based on an analysis conducted by the Foundation for Defence of Democracies—a U.S.-based research organization—Turkey has the potential to utilize its domestically developed Hisar-O and Hisar-U medium-range air-defense systems, along with the extended-range Siper air-defense system capable of engaging adversary aircraft from distances up to 200 kilometers.


 This kind of operation might make ongoing Israeli attacks more complicated, as they target alleged significant weapons caches from the Assad era that could represent a future strategic risk. Since December, Israel has carried out such assaults on suspected weapon storage sites and military installations in Syria numerous times, amounting to hundreds of strikes.


 Similar to Israel, NATO member Turkey boasts a sophisticated indigenous defense sector and is emerging as a significant exporter of cutting-edge weaponry—a sharp contrast to the outdated and largely obsolescent arms possessed by Syria’s previous government.


 In the early stages of the conflict that began in Syria back in 2011, the country was equipped with an extensive air-defense system comprising Soviet (and subsequently Russian) radars and missile systems. This robust setup caused concern among Western defense strategists who feared it might complicate plans for establishing a "no-fly zone" aimed at preventing airstrikes by the Assad government against civilians.


 The no-fly zone failed to come into existence, even though NATO carried out significant attacks against the Syrian regime in April 2018. Instead of this proposed measure, Syria's air defense system quickly deteriorated due to the ongoing civil conflict and was largely obliterated during multiple strikes led primarily by Israel, which were often intended to stop shipments of weapons from Iran.


 Even enhanced with potent Russian-provided
 S-300
 Systems-wise, Syria’s air-defense protections were found to be inadequate as the S-300 systems couldn’t be employed against Israeli forces without approval from Moscow—an authorization said to have been granted merely one time in 2016. In this instance, Israel demonstrated its capability to inflict significant harm upon these S-300 defenses.
 Iran

Based on information from Turkish defense companies Aselsan and Roketsan, a single Siper battery has the capability to launch up to 20 missiles during engagements, capable of concurrently locking onto as many as 10 adversary aircraft at once.

There are speculations suggesting that this technology could potentially end up in Syria.


 Israel has been at the forefront of employing air-to-surface ballistic missiles to neutralize sophisticated defense systems such as the S-300. By leveraging the strong propulsion of these munitions along with the swiftness and elevation of the delivering aircraft, they achieve remarkable speeds and extended ranges.


 However, even though aeroballistic missiles have successfully overcome S-300 systems in Iran, their effectiveness remains unproven when faced with land-based air-defense networks equipped with AESA radar technology.


 Although it remains unclear how much Turkey and Israel want to prevent a significant confrontation, they might resort to harassing and impeding each other’s military activities using their sophisticated electronic warfare tools. This kind of behavior has historical precedence in Syria.

 트럼프 대통령은 1980년대에 개발돼 현재 운용 중인 세계 최강 F-22 등 5세대 전투기를 이을 6세대 전투기의 명칭을 ‘F-47’로 정했다고 전했다.


 그러면서 “47은 아름다운 숫자”라고 덧붙였다.


 미국의 제47대 대통령인 트럼프는 자신의 대통령 재임 순번을 따 전투기 명칭을 ‘F-47’로 명명한 것으로 보인다.

 미 공군은 제6세대 첫 전투기인 F-47을 2030년대 중반쯤 실전 배치할 목표인 것으로 알려졌다.


 전투기 가격은 현재 8000만 달러(약 1172억원)에 달하는 F-35보다 훨씬 비쌀 것으로 예상된다.


 그동안 일각에선 ‘제6세대 유인 전투기’ 실전 배치 시기가 되면, 무인으로 운용되는 자율 드론 전투기나 반(半)자율 드론 전투기가 대세를 이루게 될 것이라며 개발에 부정적인 입장을 밝혀왔다.


 미 공군은 F-47 전투기를 반(半)자율 드론 전투기와 함께 편대를 이뤄 운용하도록 할 방침인 것으로 알려졌다.

 또 “F-47은 진정한 세계 최초의 유인 6세대 전투기”라며 “미 공군에 도전하는 모든 적을 능가하고, 전술적으로 압도하도록 설계됐다”라고 설명했다.


 미 공군은 “F-47은 전례 없는 ‘성숙도’(maturity)를 갖췄다. F-22는 현존 최고의 공중우세 전투기고 현대화를 거쳐 성능이 더욱 향상될 것이지만, F-47은 세대를 뛰어넘은 도약이 될 것”이라고 내다봤다.


 그러면서 “미 공군은 미국의 하늘을 수호하고, 억지력이 흔들리지 않도록 할 것이다. F-47을 통해 적의 균형을 무너뜨리고 궁지에 몰아넣으며 우리의 글로벌 입지를 강화할 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

 輸出する護衛艦とは違う！けど豪州へ向かった「のしろ」
</h2>

 2025年3月11日から15日までの5日間、海上自衛隊の護衛艦「のしろ」が、オーストラリアのパースに所在するスターリング海軍基地に寄港しました。「のしろ」は2月17日から4月3日まで、令和7年豪州方面派遣訓練に参加しており、スターリング海軍基地への寄港は、その一環として行われたものです。

 海上自衛隊の艦艇が外国へ寄港することは、現在では珍しくなっています。通常海外で寄港する海上自衛隊の艦艇は、その国の海軍との親善関係を深めるためのレセプションや共同・親善訓練などを行っていますが、今回の「のしろ」の寄港はセールスが主目的です。


 すなわち、オーストラリアの政府要人と同国海軍に、「のしろ」の属するもがみ型護衛艦をアピールして、商戦を有利に進めるという重要なミッションが課せられているのです。


 オーストラリアは現在、同国海軍が運用しているアンザック級フリゲートを後継する新型水上戦闘艦の導入計画「プロジェクト・シー3000」を進めています。オーストラリア政府は2024年11月25日に、日本の提案した「令和6年度護衛艦」と、ドイツの提案した「MEKO A-210」を最終候補に選定しています。


 令和6年度護衛艦はもがみ型ではなく、もがみ型を大型化して能力を向上するものです。ならば、もがみ型の「のしろ」をオーストラリアの政府要人や海軍に見せても意味はないと思われるかもしれませんが、対抗馬となるMEKO A-210もまだ実艦は存在していません。令和6年度護衛艦のベースとなるもがみ型の実物を見せられたことは、商戦を進める上で有利な要素になると筆者（竹内 修：軍事ジャーナリスト）は思います。

 安倍政権では相当ムリしたことも!?
</h2>

 振り返ると、2017年6月に開催されたパリエアショーには、やはり輸出商戦を有利に進める目的で、海上自衛隊のP-1哨戒機が1機参加しています。

 当時フランスは同国航空宇宙軍の運用している「アトランティック2」哨戒機の、またドイツも同国海軍が運用している「P-3C」哨戒機の後継機導入をそれぞれ検討していました。両国にアピールするため、防衛装備品の輸出に積極的だった安倍政権の肝いりで、P-1はパリエアショーに参加することになったわけです。


 2017年の春から初夏にかけて、P-1は小さなトラブルに見舞われており、飛行可能な機体は数機しかありませんでした。このため海上自衛隊はパリエアショーへの参加を渋っていたようなのですが、故安倍首相の強い要望には抗えず、2機のP-1を派遣すれば、どちらか1機はパリまでたどり着けるだろうと考えました。


 2機のうち1機は給油のため着陸したインド洋のディエゴガルシア島でトラブルに見舞われ、パリまでの飛行を断念。パリエアショーでは1機のみが地上展示されることとなりました。


 筆者はこの2017年パリエアショーの取材を行っていますが、パリ到着前にこの話を聞いていたため、「そこまで無理をしてP-1がパリへ行く必要はあるのだろうか？」と思っていました。


 パリエアショーは月曜日から金曜日まで、軍人や航空宇宙業界のビジネスマン、メディア関係者などを対象とする「トレードデイ」と、土・日曜日の一般見学者を対象とする「パブリックデイ」から構成されています。筆者はトレードディで会場を訪れていた来場者、すなわち「プロ」の方々にP-1の感想を聞いてみたところ、おおむね次のような話を耳にしました。


 「日本が国産哨戒機を作ったことは知識としては知っていた。しかしこうしてパリまで飛んできたP-1をこの目で見て、失礼かもしれないが、日本が高性能な航空機を作る力を持っている国であることを実感できたし、日本の航空機や航空産業に対するイメージも、ポジティブな方向に変わった」

 実物見て「おおっ！」ってなった海保・海自
</h2>

 残念ながら仏独両国はP-1を採用しませんでしたが、世界各国から来た少なからぬ「プロ」に、日本の技術力をアピールできた意義は、小さなものではなかったと筆者は思います。

 日本でもそのような事例があります。現在、海上保安庁が運用し、海上自衛隊も採用を決めたUAS（無人航空機システム）「シーガーディアン」のメーカーであるジェネラル・アトミクス・エアロノーティカル・システムズ（GA-ASI）は、2018年5月に長崎県でシーガーディアンの原型機「ガーディアン」の飛行実証を行っています。


 この飛行実証には海上保安庁や海上自衛隊の方々も数多く招待されており、多くの「プロ」が実際にガーディアンの能力を目の当たりにしたことが、早期採用につながったと言われています。


 「百聞は一見に如かず」という言葉もあるように、防衛装備品の輸出にあたって、要職にある多くの方々に実物を見てもらうことは、その後の商戦でも、国家の技術力をアピールするうえでも、大切な事なのではないかと筆者は思います。

 Pesta formal penyatuan pesawat tempur dengan Angkatan Udara direncanakan untuk tanggal 12 April di basis militer Graf Ignatievo tersebut.


 Pengiriman tersebut adalah hasil dari kesepakatan antara pemerintah Bulgaria dan Amerika Serikat yang disahkan pada tahun 2019 hingga 2022 lewat skema penjualan militer asing AS (Foreign Military Sales/FMS). Kesepakatan ini termasuk pembelian 16 pesawat tempur jenis F-16V Block 70, yaitu 10 buah model F-16C (tipe satu kursi) serta enam buah model F-16D (tipe dua kursi), dengan jumlah uang yang dibayarkan mendekati angka 2,4 miliar dolar AS.


 Delapan pesawat awal diperkirakan akan diselesaikan pada tahun 2025, sementara yang lainnya direncanakan serahannya pada tahun 2027. Ini menjadi bagian dari usaha Bulgaria dalam meng-upgrade kembali kapabilitas pertahanan udaranya menggunakan teknologi paling mutakhir.

 On Wednesday, the U.S. military released a video providing a seldom-seen glimpse of an air-to-air engagement over the Red Sea. The footage depicts American fighter jets neutralizing Houthi drones using inexpensive, precision-guided rockets that cost considerably less than advanced air-to-air missiles.
 
 
 The popular segment showcases an affordable method for U.S. aircraft to
 take down Houthi drones
 , which have persistently threatened alongside missiles for more than a year now.
 
 
 U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for
 Middle East operations
 , stated on Wednesday that a U.S. fighter jet intercepted a single Houthi assault drone with APKWS laser-guided rockets. Video evidence shows both drones detonating over the sea.
 
 
 The AGR-20 FALCO Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System, known as APKWS, transforms Unguided Hydra 70 2.75-inch rockets into precise weaponry by adding laser-guidance kits. These rockets measure almost 19 inches in length and under 3 inches in diameter, rendering them very slender.
 
 
 Gen. David Allvin, the Air Force Chief of Staff, said the APKWS costs just $35,000 a piece — a fraction of one of the air-to-air missiles that could have been used instead to take down the drone. For instance, he said, the AIM-9 missile costs around $500,000, while the AIM-120 is more than double that at around $1 million.

 The cost of the rockets is more closely aligned with the price tag of a Houthi drone, which is likely in the range of tens of thousands of dollars. Officials have said that using an expensive missile to intercept this kind of threat is on the wrong side of the cost curve.
 
 
 "More savings. More lethality. More Air Force," Allvin wrote on social media on Wednesday.
 
 
 CENTCOM did not disclose when or where the engagement occurred, nor did it say what aircraft used the APKWS to shoot down the Houthi drones. These rockets can be fired from a range of aircraft. A US official
 told
 The War Zone earlier this year that US Air Force F-16s had used the rockets against Houthi drones.
 
 
 Years earlier, the Air Force tested the air-to-ground rockets as a cheaper air-to-air kill solution.
 
 
 The footage comes amid a
 fresh campaign of US airstrikes
 against the Houthis in Yemen. The Trump administration has vowed to intensify its efforts to deter the rebel group from attacking military and civilian vessels transiting key Middle East shipping lanes.
 
 
 The new campaign began on Saturday, with CENTCOM saying that it had "initiated a series of operations consisting of precision strikes against Iran-backed Houthi targets across Yemen to defend American interests, deter enemies, and restore freedom of navigation."

 Air Force Lt. Gen Alexus Grynkewich, the director of operations for the Joint Staff, said Monday that the initial wave of strikes hit over 30 Houthi targets at multiple locations in Yemen, including training sites, drone infrastructure, weapons storage facilities, and command centers.
 
 
 Grynkewich told reporters at a briefing that the operation extended into Sunday and Monday and would continue for several days "until we achieve the president's objectives."
 
 
 CENTCOM has published footage this week showing flight operations aboard the
 USS Harry S. Truman
 — the latest US aircraft carrier to see combat against the Houthis — as well as missile launches from warships in its strike group.
 
 
 And President Donald Trump has suddenly taken an aggressive approach to the
 Houthi conflict
 after a period of relative quiet in the Red Sea. He has vowed to keep striking the rebels and even threatened to go after Iran, their main supporter and provider of military assistance.
 
 
 "Tremendous damage has been inflicted upon the Houthi barbarians, and watch how it will get progressively worse — It's not even a fair fight, and never will be. They will be completely annihilated!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.

 Kapal-kapal bertipe Hamina sudah lama menjadi bagian penting dari armada Angkatan Laut Finlandia sejak permulaan dekade 2000-an.  When people envision the U.S. Air Force’s assault-ready planes, their minds often gravitate towards its fighter jets, which receive most of the media attention. Before the spotlight fully embraced those sleek machines, another category of aircraft was specifically marked for attack missions. Among them, the standout model was undoubtedly the A-1 Skyraider.

 The A-1 was taken out of active duty in 1973 after successfully completing its operations during two significant military engagements. In its place came a new model. At an announcement made by Lt. Michael Conley, who leads the Air Force Special Operations Command, in March 2025, he revealed that the recently created OA-1K will carry forward with the moniker Skyraider II, paying tribute to the original’s remarkable history.


 It might appear paradoxical for the Air Force to manage a propeller-driven airplane in 2025, yet the newly introduced Skyraider II is an example of this.

 The OA-1K Skyraider II

 The OA-1K Skyraider II is jointly manufactured by Air Tractor and L3Harris based on the Air Tractor AT-802, primarily utilized for firefighting and agricultural purposes within the U.S. This model has undergone full militarization for use with the Air Force and was formerly known as the Sky Warden, designed for tasks such as intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance strikes. Equipped with short take-off and landing abilities, this compact plane requires minimal space at ground level and can perform various missions efficiently, essentially replacing multiple vehicles with just one aircraft.


 The Skyraider II boasts a loiter capability of up to six hours within a 200-mile range and can transport a combat payload weighing 6,000 pounds. This aircraft is driven by a solitary Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67F turboprop engine delivering 1,600 horsepower, allowing the Skyraider II to achieve a top velocity of 245 mph and climb to altitudes as high as 10,000 feet. The provided figures represent the standard specs for the AT-802U; however, these might vary when comparing against configurations optimized for full combat readiness versus what’s officially disclosed data.


 The Air Force has acquired 75 aircraft with an investment ranging from $2 to $3 billion. These planes are intended for various tasks such as providing close-air support, conducting armed reconnaissance, gathering intelligence through surveillance and reconnaissance activities, executing precise strikes, coordinating forward air operations, and facilitating strike coordination efforts. It’s anticipated that this program will reach full operational status post-2029. There are also plans in place for establishing four squadrons each comprising 15 aircraft alongside another squadron dedicated solely to training purposes.

 The A-1 Skyraider
</h2>

 The OA-1K Skyraider II must uphold the remarkable heritage of its predecessor, which played a crucial role in various aerial combats supported by the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and numerous allied forces like the Republic of Vietnam Air Force over an extended period. Similar to many military aircraft, this model came in different versions; however, the variant that underwent extensive production and served extensively was the A-1H, with 713 units constructed. The A-1H featured a cruising speed of approximately 198 mph and maintained a maximum operational range of around 275 miles when loaded down with about one ton of munitions. It boasted a top speed of roughly 322 mph and could ascend as high as 29,400 feet.


 The A-1 challenged the era of jets by operating alongside newer aircraft during its service period. Its prolonged deployment can be attributed to its accurate strike abilities, offering excellent close air support. The plane had the capacity to cruise slowly over areas for extended durations, thus assisting ground forces effectively.

 As reported in a study released last month in the Chinese scholarly magazine Knitting Industries, the solution hinges on a two-tier combined material modeled after

 By incorporating conductive threads into a warp-knit “double-layered jacquard” design, scientists from the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) along with Tiangong University developed a fabric that can absorb up to 90.6 percent of radar waves within the 8-26 GHz range, surpassing traditional coating methods.


 According to Professor Jiang Qian’s research team, this material represents a “fusion of traditional patterns with contemporary electromagnetism.”

 Similar to how traditional Jacquard weavers utilized “flower books” with patterns akin to perforated cards to store complex designs, Jiang and her team incorporated radar-evading structures right into the fabric’s structure. The quartz fibers serve as an insulating foundation layer, whereas stainless-steel threads generate resonating circuits designed to convert electromagnetic waves into thermal energy.


 Each conductive thread is positioned precisely to direct and capture signals, much like how ancient weavers would arrange silk threads to portray dragons or clouds, as stated by the

 The laboratory tests highlighted significant mechanical benefits. It was discovered that the composite can endure up to 93.5 megapascals of longitudinal tensile stress—which surpasses the strength of conventional coatings by over tenfold. This enhanced resilience is due to the knitted material’s anisotropic design, wherein the load-carrying threads are oriented parallel to each other.

 Archaeologists link Jacquard’s roots back to the looms of the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC), where craftsmen used manual “multi-heddle” mechanisms to create intricate geometric designs. These devices advanced significantly during the Han period, featuring as many as 120 heddle rods, evolving into highly refined machinery. This technological progression culminated in what was essentially an early form of the Jacquard weaving system, evidenced by the discovery of such a device among the artifacts found in Chengdu's Laoguanshan Tombs, marking it as the world’s earliest known example.


 A scholar from Beijing specializing in scientific history mentioned that those Han dynasty looms were not solely used for producing luxurious items," but wished to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of the technology involved.


 Just as early binary computers stored weaving codes in physical memory, today’s military engineers appear to have rediscovered this approach.
