  During my final snowboarding excursion of the season, the iX really stood out.

  Cold-weather testing is an
  important thing for EVs
  , since battery-powered cars traditionally haven't done well when the temperatures drop. While new chemistries and more advanced active thermal management systems have helped a lot, anyone who's been doing the EV thing for a while will probably find themselves thinking twice before heading out for a long drive on a cold day.
 </p>
 <p>
  My preferred chilly drives lead all the way up to Vermont. Although I reside just north of the border in Upstate New York, once I enter the Green Mountain state, things feel somewhat distinct and more pleasant.
 </p>
 <p>
  This holds particularly true during the colder season. Whenever feasible, I attempt to take one-day excursions to southern Vermont to enjoy early mornings skiing at Mount Snow ski area. The journey spans about 75 miles and usually consumes around 90 minutes provided I do not encounter numerous school buses or snowplows en route, offering an ideal blend of different road conditions. You'll find stretches of highways mixed with higher speed local routes, alongside plenty of twisty mountain roads.
 </p>
 <p>
  In other words, this is a great track for putting various types of vehicles through their paces, including our long-term 2024 model.

  Pre-Charged
 </h2>
 <p>
  I had wished to take the iX out for a day of skiing earlier this winter, but as I mentioned
  in the last update,
  A sudden inability to charge resulted in insufficient battery power for my needs. To follow up on this issue: The iX occasionally reverts to time slot mode upon connection, as previously mentioned. However, following the publication of our latest update, a BMW representative reached out to us and is currently investigating the matter.
 </p>
 <p>
  For added safety, the evening before, I double-checked that the iX was both connected and genuinely charging. When I packed my equipment the next day, it showed a reassuring 90%, just as I had hoped.

  This alone demonstrates my trust in the iX; I was embarking on a long journey.

  And I didn't feel compelled to charge it completely.

  I lowered the passenger seat and positioned my snowboard on it with the bindings facing up, securing it with the seat belt to keep it steady. Throughout our journey, even with all the curves and bends, the board remained perfectly still.
 </p>
 <p>
  I began my journey with some highway driving directly towards the rising sun. I own several pairs of sunglasses which seem to be problematic for the Driver Monitoring Camera included in the Driving Assistance Pro package. On this particular morning, I didn’t wear them at all; however, the system struggled to detect my eyes because of additional reflections caused by the early sunlight’s glare.
 </p>

  I found myself either squinting due to the assistive system being active or having to drive manually throughout the journey, keeping my hands firmly on the steering wheel.

  The Drive Over
 </h2>

  That was the sole small hiccup during my journey. The iX proved to be both comfortable and silent as I sat among morning commuters queuing uphill in Troy, NY. When the road cleared, the BMW’s powerful performance and responsive throttle made swift overtakes on two-lane highways effortless.
 </p>
 <p>
  I arrived well ahead of when the ski lift operations were set to begin, managing everything efficiently even though we used the air conditioning and enjoyed ourselves during the trip. Once more, the estimated range proved accurate. As soon as I exited the garage, my vehicle stated that I would reach Mount Snow with 55% battery left. Sure enough, after driving for about 75 miles, the gauge still showed 55%. This held true even considering the outside temperature was below 30°F.
 </p>
 <p>
  The chilly temperatures resulted in frosty trail conditions early in the morning. However, the milder weather in the preceding weeks led to just a few trails being accessible at Mount Snow. Despite this, I enjoyed a fantastic morning session, which unfortunately turned out to be my second and last outing of the season. My busy travel itinerary along with bringing home a new puppy have made it difficult for me to hit the slopes regularly.

  As it was time to consider returning, during my final ascent in the elevator, I opened the My BMW app and instructed the vehicle to begin preconditioning.
  We first discovered that remote requests such as controlling the temperature were quite inconsistent.
  The vehicle has recently become much more dependable when reacting to commands issued through the application.
 </p>
 <p>
  I had parked just beneath the start of the trail, allowing me to exit my vehicle and immediately enter a cozy cabin with welcoming warmth. The rear seats of the iX offered ample space for me to remove my boots and equipment without needing to twist uncomfortably.

  Returning Home
 </h2>

  With my board secured at the rear and multiple insulated layers spread throughout the cabin, I set off downhill towards home. Since I had utilized just 35% of the battery charge on the ascent and the vehicle estimated about 26% would remain upon arrival, I pressed the accelerator more freely during the descent.
 </p>
 <p>
  The roads were well-maintained, free from ice and snow, yet remained somewhat grimy at certain points. The residue from winter salts and sands hadn’t completely been rinsed away. Nonetheless, the iX handles remarkably well considering its size, and the Nokian Remedy WRG5 tires continue to provide excellent traction under various circumstances.
 </p>
 <p>
  Using the built-in navigation system, I opted for a somewhat shorter path on my return journey, reducing the overall distance by approximately five miles. Coupled with marginally higher temperatures above 34 degrees and increased descent sections of the road, this resulted in only a 32% fuel consumption rate for the trip back.

  The positive aspect of this situation is clear. However, there was a minor letdown regarding the BMW’s range estimation, which proved inaccurate. When I arrived back home, the car indicated that 26 percent battery life remained, whereas I actually had 32 percent left.
 </p>
 <p>
  That's one of the largest inaccuracies in distance estimation I've observed with iDrive’s built-in navigation system, which really says something. Usually, missing by just six percent would be seen as quite good for most vehicles. Moreover, if my electric vehicle is going to have an error margin, I prefer it to underestimate rather than overestimate.
 </p>
 <p>
  The nearly 150-mile round trip, mostly in sub- or near-freezing temperatures, used 58 percent of the battery, a consumption of 2.8 mi/kWh, giving me an extremely comfortable window. There's still not much of a charging network in Vermont, but I didn't even think twice about it.
 </p>
 <p>
  However, the snow has completely melted away now, making it perfect for milder adventures. Additionally, we'll delve deeper into how the iX performs as a dog-carrying vehicle in our upcoming discussion.

 When I was asked to review plant-based cheeses, I thought twice about doing so. Although there are some companies, usually smaller operations, that make non-dairy cheese out of fermented nuts or soya beans, more often than not it’s manufactured by big companies who are adept at recreating flavours, but who use ultra-processed ingredients such as emulsifiers, stabilisers and additives to get there.
</p>
<p>
 I’ve used vegan cheese only a handful of times in the eight years I’ve been writing
 my vegan column for the Guardian
 , partly because I like to know what’s going into my body (and, on reading the ingredients, I am often bamboozled), and also because it varies so wildly in terms of how it behaves: does it melt, split, grate and, most importantly, how does it taste? For a food writer, that makes it tricky to use and make sure there’s consistency in the journey between my kitchen and yours.
</p>
<p>
 So here is my chance to dig a little deeper. In testing these cheeses, I’ve led with flavour first, looking for anything on the spectrum between buttery, sweet and mild to full-blown extra-sharp, tangy and pungent. Following closely behind, the texture has to be right, too, because so much about eating cheese is about mouthfeel and that satisfying, creamy fattiness. Finally, credentials: my vote will always be in favour of products made with natural ingredients, because, ultimately, I believe that’s where the best food comes from.

 We first saw it at CES 2025. Now, the Lenovo ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition admittedly, a name that could use some work is in India. It has been launched for Rs 1,37,255, and it is unlike any other Windows laptop I've come across. The market is flooded with thin and light laptops, but they all look the same and offer the same generic features. This one, however, has potential. It is not just another thin and light Windows laptop it feels like a machine built with purpose.

 I had a brief hands-on experience with the ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition at Lenovo's fourth annual Tech World event in Mumbai, and even in that short time, it impressed me.

 Lenovo ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition: Initial impressions
</h3>
<p>
 At just 1.21kg, the Lenovo ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition is impressively lightweight, making it a great option for professionals who are always on the move. Especially if you're like me and always need to have a laptop on you trust me this one feels like a feather in the backpack.
</p>
<p>
 However, despite being lightweight, the build quality feels premium. Lenovo has also gone the sustainable route, using 50 per cent recycled aluminium in its construction, which is a nice touch. What I immediately noticed was the weight distribution. You can open the lid with one hand, a small but telling detail that speaks to the level of refinement in its design.
</p>
<p>
 The 14-inch OLED display is easily one of the highlights. With a sharp 2.8K (2880 x 1800) resolution and deep, vibrant colours, it is sure to make everything from documents to videos look crisp and lively. The demo units at the booth had vibrant HDR videos playing, and boy, the panel looked breathtaking. That said, the glossy finish means reflections could be a potential issue in bright environments, but the contrast and colour depth of OLED should more than makeup for it. The refresh rate, however, is limited to 60Hz, which seems like an odd miss on Lenovo's part, given that in this price range most Windows laptops now come with displays that have higher refresh rates, like 120Hz.

 The Lenovo ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition is powered by an Intel Core Ultra 5 226V processor, paired with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage. While I couldn't put it through demanding workloads in a crowded demo area, everything on the machine felt smooth apps launched quickly, animations were fluid, and Windows 11 ran without a hitch. Of course, the real test would be in everyday use, but based on my initial experience, it seems well-equipped for professional tasks.
</p>
<p>
 ThinkPads have long been known for their keyboards, and this one lives up to its reputation. The keys have around 1.4mm of travel, offering a comfortable typing experience, though I personally would have liked a bit more spacing. The bigger surprise, however, was the trackpad. Lenovo has switched to a haptic trackpad, eliminating physical clicks in favour of a smooth, pressure-sensitive surface. It feels precise, responsive, and dare I say it one of the best I've come across on a Windows laptop.

 It's pretty clear that Lenovo has put serious thought into the ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition, balancing portability, performance, and sustainability. It's sleek, powerful enough for professional workloads, and introduces some well-executed design refinements. While a brief demo isn't enough to determine how it holds up in the long run, my first impressions suggest this is a strong contender for those seeking a high-quality Windows laptop for under Rs 1,50,000. I'd love to spend more time with it to see how it performs in real-world use, but from what I've seen so far, Lenovo is onto something good here.

 Ben Franklin is a relatively new
 Tesla
 Model Y owner. He’s had his Long Range All-Wheel Drive car for about a year now. Like most Model Y owners, he’s curious to know how much better – if at all – the all-new Model Y is and whether he should consider an upgrade.
</p>
<p>
 Ben went along to the Tesla store in Kierland Commons near his home in Scottsdale Arizona, where the new Model Y is already available for test drive. There he joined the queue and took his turn in a brand new, Launch Series Model Y with pearl white paint and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, which he put to good use.
</p>
<p>
 So what did Ben think, firstly with the looks? “I like the looks,’ he said. “I like the front end with the new front light bar, and I like the design touch that they did on the side mirrors with a tiny bit of aerodynamic improvement.
</p>
<p>
 “I like the looks of both cars. I honestly find my Model Y extremely attractive still, and I find the new one... well, I find it a little bit more mainstream. That gives me a slight feeling of disappointment because I prefer the more radical look of the old car.
</p>
<p>
 “Everyone seems to be doing these full-width light bars now and it might be harder to pick the Tesla out from something like a Hyundai.”

 Ben was more positive when he got inside. “The car feels so much more solid and for some reason it just feels bigger inside. I know it’s not, but maybe it’s the new materials and slightly updated design.
</p>
<p>
 “When you get in the new one, you're immediately impressed with the feeling of solidity. And I think the screen is improved. It seems much sharper, at least to me.
</p>
<p>
 I believe the materials have gotten better. The seats are now more supportive and slightly firmer. Also, the steering wheel has been altered, though I’m not sure why Tesla thinks they need to keep changing things.
</p>
<p>
 One enhancement that really caught my attention was the addition of a microphone button on the steering wheel for voice commands—I consider this a significant improvement. Additionally, I quickly discovered that the scroll wheel can be used to activate or deactivate the self-driving or autopilot feature.
</p>
<p>
 “So there are now three buttons on the right side of the steering wheel: one is the speaker, one is a scroll. The third one, which I really, really like, allows you to operate the cameras from the steering wheel. You can set it up so that you push the button and get an all-around view, which personally I find very useful.

 A major complaint from drivers of the latest Tesla Model 3 centres around the absence of stalks on either side of the steering wheel. Instead of a traditional left-side turn signal stalk, the Model 3 features control buttons integrated into the steering wheel itself. In response, Tesla introduced a new indicator stalk for the Model Y positioned to the left of the steering wheel; however, this model lacks a stalk on the right-hand side which was previously used for operating both the gear selection and Autopilot functions. How did all of this affect Ben’s experience behind the wheel?
</p>
<p>
 My car features a stalk on the right side, whereas the new Model Y only includes the turn signal on the left. Initially, I expected to strongly dislike not having a driving stalk on the right; however, I was comfortable with using the drive and park buttons on the screen instead. To move forwards or backwards, you simply scroll up and down on the screen. It seems that opening the door will also engage the parking function.
</p>
<p>
 Tesla claims that the new Model Y is over 20 per cent quieter on the move, thanks to new acoustic glass and improvements to body rigidity, too. Did Ben agree?
</p>
<p>
 It's considerably more peaceful," he remarked. "I observed this immediately upon entering and closing the door, but it becomes even more noticeable when you're in motion.
</p>
<p>
 Tesla's attempts to enhance the driving experience – which was a major concern for owners of the initial Model Y – seem to have been successful as well. "The ride felt much nicer," commented Ben. "It certainly seems more comfortable now. I also found the steering to be considerably smoother."

 Tesla has also asserted significant improvements in general quality, a point that Ben highlighted. "As I was driving my car along Scottsdale Road towards the test drive, I could hear various rattles," he mentioned. "However, when I took the new Model Y over the same section of road, there wasn’t a single rattle."
</p>
<p>
 Ben is already quite fond of the Full Self-Driving technology in his personal Model Y, and he shared his experience saying, "What surprised me about Tesla was that I ended up driving less and less. Instead, I found myself utilizing the Full Self- Driving feature increasingly often."
</p>
<p>
 I believe that if there is any enhancement in Full Self-Driving with the new vehicle, it's due to the chassis responding more favourably to commands compared to the current model.
</p>
<p>
 Ben also considers the range to be crucial, mentioning that the improvement in this aspect was a key factor in his decision to upgrade. "During my test drive of the new model, I found its estimated range to be around 326 miles," he explained. "Even over time, I believe the newer version will still maintain an impressive range exceeding 300 miles. Currently, my present Model Y manages slightly less than 300 miles."

 In regard to this crucial choice, will Ben opt for an upgrade from his present Model Y to the latest version? "Absolutely," he stated. "I am really excited about it: the extended battery life, enhanced comfort while driving, the quieter interior, and I particularly like the fresh control buttons on the steering wheel."

<p>
 Ben is even beginning to consider finalizing the deal as quickly as possible. "From what I gather, in the US, Tesla will waive the last three months of your lease and permit you to upgrade."
</p>
<p>
 “Without a doubt, I will do that.”
</p>
<p>
 The Tesla Model Y has become available for purchase in the US, where pre-orders can be placed for the Launch Series model priced at $61,630 prior to any deductions from federal tax credits. Over in the UK, the same Launch Series vehicle retails for £60,990.

      </h2>
      <p>
       When recommending stability shoes to my patients, I advise them to seek out those with a straight last design," explains Paul Langer, a sports podiatrist at Twin Cities Orthopedics and former president of the American Association of Podiatric Sports Medicine. A straight-last shoe has an internal structure that fills in the arch area, allowing for a continuous straight line along the side of the sole from the heel to the ball of the foot, providing comprehensive support underneath the entire arch. "In truly straight-last footwear, it becomes impossible to determine whether it’s meant for your left or right foot due to this uniformity," adds Langer. "Typically, most shoes have some degree of curvature; however, the lesser the curve, the greater the shoe's overall stability."

       Langer views this broad base as more crucial for stability compared to the thicker medial support, which has traditionally determined the stability classification. "When discussing stability," he explains, "I'm likely focusing more on the design of the shoe rather than the positioning aspect."

       This applies equally to other stabilization elements such as guide rails, frames, plates, or heel counters. "I worry less about these components," Langer states, citing studies indicating that such devices do not manage or rectify overpronation issues. Nonetheless, he acknowledges the role of stabilization techniques, noting they may lessen the unsteadiness brought on by compressing into softer foam materials. "Stabilization footwear does not fix problems," Langer clarifies. "It merely tends to be slightly more stable compared to regular shoes."

       Langer also mentions, "I aim to assist my patients in realizing that a padded shoe naturally offers less stability compared to walking barefoot."        The 30th-anniversary edition of the Kayano showcased one of the most significant shifts in stability technology within the footwear industry last year. Over thirty years, the Kayano model maintained control over runners' strides through robust elements like a pronounced medial post and a stiff midfoot support bridge. However, for the Kayano 30—and continuing into the Kayano 31—this conventional approach was supplanted by an innovative design featuring subtle geometrical enhancements and less intrusive mechanisms aimed at guiding the foot more naturally.
      </p>
      <p>
       The platform boasts an expansive design from the heel to the toes, with additional width beneath the ball of the foot. On the outer part of the heel, the structure is carved away to allow for greater compression, which helps smooth and decelerate the shift from initial heel strike to mid-stance. Conversely, a protrusion on the inner side limits compression, while the midsole rises around the backside of the heel, providing containment and gentle support.
      </p>
      <p>
       The most distinctive feature is a section of softer, low-density yet very reactive foam located beneath the arch where earlier models featured a firm medial support. According to ASICS, this softer segment compresses upon loading, thereby expanding the effective width of the midfoot area. Additionally, owing to its superior bounce compared to the primary material, it helps guide your foot back into a more efficient position during the transition from mid-stance phase.

       While running, I failed to spot the bump beneath the arch, but I could tell it had an impact as my weight shifted smoothly towards the front part of my foot, making me feel balanced and prepared for propulsion. Primarily, what stood out was how wide the shoe was—it offered ample room without being overly loose—along with providing great stability during each stride from heel strike through toe-off. Even with a substantial midsole measuring 40mm thick, I never experienced instability; this can be attributed to the harmonious blend of softness and bounce-back capability, coupled with unexpectedly pliable forefoot construction. Although the overall experience wasn't geared toward speed, it remained comfortable and free-flowing, avoiding stiffness altogether. Both of my differently shaped feet received excellent support throughout, which became more apparent on extended jogs where fatigue began setting in.

       We awarded the Glycerin GTS 21 as "The Best All-Around Stability Shoe" last year due to its excellent combination of cushioning comfort and supportive stability. In this latest iteration—the 22nd model—Brooks has integrated their well-known GuideRails, which consist of raised walls atop the midsole around the back part of the foot on either side, with firmer material on the inner side near the arch. Additionally, they've introduced an innovative element: specially calibrated midsole foam.

       What sets apart Brooks' nitrogen-filled specially adjusted midsole, which we
       first noticed in Glycerin Max last autumn

       Carson Caprara, who serves as the senior vice president of footwear at Brooks, mentions that they introduce two distinct chemical compositions into the midsole mold prior to initiating the supercritical gas-infusion technique. "Once this mixture encounters the pressurized nitrogen infusion," he elaborates, "the two types of cellular structures respond differently—the internal cells remain relatively compact whereas the external ones expand more noticeably, resulting in increased suppleness and leniency. This entire procedure occurs seamlessly without any joints or protrusions, thereby providing an uninterrupted consistency."

       Brooks adjusts the foam so that the midsole contains a greater proportion of larger cells in the heel for better shock absorption during landing. This gradually shifts to predominantly smaller cells in the responsive forefoot area. As a consequence, the running experience becomes notably plush when the outer foam absorbs impacts, yet remains firm as your bodyweight seamlessly moves towards the front part of the foot and propels you forward. In this newer version, I noticed enhanced protection coupled with increased responsiveness compared to the previous Glycerin 21. My strides were agile, allowing me to cover distances quicker than anticipated without feeling fatigued.

       The combination of guide rails in the rear, the firmer, tuned foam up front, and a slightly more filled-in shape under the arch, delivered mostly non-intrusive stability from touch down to toe-off. I could, however, feel the pressure of the guide rail under my arch more than in previous versions, especially toward the front where the foam under it firmed up. This was comfortingly supportive for my foot that needs bolstering but felt a bit controlling for my neutral foot. That lack of versatility kept us from naming the Glycerin 22 best all-around, but the stronger support makes it a better choice for those who want the guidance.

This setup gave me the sensation of having my foot tightly bound with athletic tape throughout each step, offering support and adapting dynamically as my foot moved through different phases of motion.
