 Residents in Port Roberts, Washington, have found themselves entangled in the fallout from the continuing trade disputes between the two nations ever since the president took action.
 Donald Trump
 warned they would impose significant duties on an extensive range of products coming into the country from Canada.

 People residing in this tiny exclave, which forms part of a country but is physically cut off from its main territory by another nation’s land, are experiencing the immediate impact of the chaotic tariffs firsthand – particularly affecting their three eateries and lone supermarket.

 The unique five-square-mile community in Whatcom County is surrounded by water on three sides and has only one land connection to Canada.
</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">
 Residents can either re-enter the US through one border crossing and about a 25 miles car ride to reach downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, or they can make their way through two border crossings and an approximate 25 mile car ride through Canada to then enter the US at Boundary Bay Border.
</p>

 More than 70 percent of properties are owned by Canadians, and more than 50 percent of an estimated 1,200 residents have dual citizenship, Wayne Lyle, the President of Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce, told the
 Canadian Press.

 The few local businesses and popular tourist attractions, including beaches, hiking trails and a golf course, have been suffering economically as many Canadians have boycotted the area ever since Trump's tariff threats and talks about making
 Canada the 51st state

 Despite all their frustration, Americans said they don't blame Canadians for feeling that way, but they are still suffering tremendously from the fallout.

 "We should look after each other and show kindness to one another, rather than letting those who aren’t aware of our existence disturb the relationships we presently share," Carleton stated.
</p>

 In the meantime, Mark Nykolaichuk, residing in the Vancouver, B.C. region, expressed his hope of playing a role in maintaining the vibrancy of the community.

 Nykolaichuk declines to visit the mainland United States, however, he has made an exception for Port Roberts due to its strong connections with Canada.

 He particularly visits the only grocery store in the exclave — the Point Roberts International Marketplace — to purchase food items he can prepare at his holiday house.

 Due to U.S. customs regulations, raw meat isn't allowed across the border, forcing Nykolaichuk to buy it in town instead.

 'Nobody wants to see this place shut down,' he said. 'If this place goes, where are the U.S. citizens going to eat? Where are they going to get their food from?'

 The Indian Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, will open the six-day drill, where India will be co-hosting alongside the Tanzania People’s Defence Force. This gathering will unite navies from various countries including Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, and South Africa.

 A 'managerial role'

 The scheduling of AIKEYME is not coincidental. China, with its vast
 Belt and Road Initiative
 , has solidified its position as Africa’s biggest trading partner and lender, according to official data indicating that commerce between them hit $295 billion last year. China has additionally set up a military presence in Djibouti and significantly invested in East African ports and infrastructure.

 India’s action is seen as a deliberate strategy to offset Beijing's increasing dominance, according to experts. "East Africa holds significant strategic importance for India across various sectors such as energy resources, and within this framework, this specific joint naval drill serves to enhance India's reputation as a trustworthy ally in Africa,” stated C. Uday Bhaskar, a former Indian navy official and director of the Society for Policy Studies research institute.

<p>
 He recognized the difficulties involved, though. Given that China's economic assets significantly outweigh those of India, Bhaskar suggested that Delhi should concentrate on fostering goodwill instead of attempting to compete with China on a purely financial basis.

 "It would be perfect if India and China could both collaborate with Africa, but achieving this would demand significant political acumen and cooperation from both parties," he noted.

During this period, these combined teams will perform collaborative monitoring operations within the exclusive economic zones of Tanzania, Mozambique, Mauritius, and Seychelles. Additionally, they plan to make stops at ports like Dar es Salaam, Nacala, Port Louis, Port Victoria, and Malé.

 Dongkeun Lee, a defense studies specialist from the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University, noted that this initiative underscored India's ambition to assume a "leadership position" within the Indian Ocean region.

 He stated that even though the Western Indian Ocean is frequently not regarded as part of the Indo-Pacific region—especially by the U.S., India’s definition of the Indo-Pacific encompasses this area. Additionally, several African nations participating in naval drills are situated in the Western Indian Ocean, signaling India's desire to take on a leadership position throughout the larger region.

According to Paul Nantulya, a research fellow at the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies affiliated with the National Defense University in the U.S., this drill marked China’s biggest military presence in Africa since 1997.

 "It appears AIKEYME was intentionally made bigger than Peace-Unity 2024. As China hasn’t held an exercise in Africa for 2025 yet, it will be intriguing to see their response to this Indian endeavor," Nantulya remarked.

 India's economic involvement in Africa began before China's current activities on the continent, he stated. "India boasts a significantly larger native populace that forms an integral part of Africa’s demographic, having arrived in the 17th century and actively participating in the region's political landscape, particularly during its fight for freedom," explained Nantulya.

 This indicates that they possess an edge since they assimilate with African communities and turn into something akin to 'native,' which Chinese enclaves do not achieve.

 According to the Confederation of Indian Industry, India’s current trade with Africa amounts to $83 billion, with approximately 90 percent of this volume being conducted through maritime channels. In the last ten years, New Delhi has provided roughly $12 billion in credit to 42 different African countries, which constitutes nearly 40 percent of its total international credit commitments.

 However, commentators indicate that India’s initiatives appear modest when measured against China’s substantial commitments, comprising 643 direct projects valued at $150 billion, as reported by the Hinrich Foundation, a trade sustainability organization based in Singapore.
</p>

 Sayantan Haldar, a maritime-security specialist with the Observer Research Foundation think tank based in Delhi, views these naval drills as an essential move for India to position itself as a key security ally in Africa.
</p>

 "Towards this objective, India’s strategic presence within the area is expected to gain significant enhancement," Haldar stated, emphasizing that converting this progress into an economic aspect would be crucial. He pointed out that India's main hurdle was China's extensive economic involvement in Africa.

For India to rival China in Africa, it must refine its strategy and promote stronger economic ties. Nonetheless, enhancing maritime security cooperation could serve as a vital foundation for India’s efforts in Africa.”

 African countries are facing challenges such as drug smuggling, unauthorized fishing, and piracy—areas where India’s naval proficiency could offer valuable assistance, according to Bhaskar.
</p>
<p>
 Even with these initiatives, India’s impact in Africa stays restrained due to the absence of permanent embassies in 16 African nations and its comparatively sluggish implementation of developmental aid.
</p>
<p>
 Sachdev stated that India’s initiatives in Africa do not seek to outcompete China economically, but rather provide a viable, enduring strategic option. This approach is particularly focused on sectors where China’s debt-heavy, government-directed strategy has sparked worries amongst African countries.

 In September, China hosted leaders from 53 African nations at the ninth edition of this gathering.

We sent a Tesla fan to test drive the all-new Model Y – here’s what they thought

 Ben Franklin is a relatively new
 Tesla
 Model Y owner. He’s had his Long Range All-Wheel Drive car for about a year now. Like most Model Y owners, he’s curious to know how much better – if at all – the all-new Model Y is and whether he should consider an upgrade.
</p>
<p>
 Ben went along to the Tesla store in Kierland Commons near his home in Scottsdale Arizona, where the new Model Y is already available for test drive. There he joined the queue and took his turn in a brand new, Launch Series Model Y with pearl white paint and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, which he put to good use.
</p>
<p>
 So what did Ben think, firstly with the looks? “I like the looks,’ he said. “I like the front end with the new front light bar, and I like the design touch that they did on the side mirrors with a tiny bit of aerodynamic improvement.
</p>
<p>
 “I like the looks of both cars. I honestly find my Model Y extremely attractive still, and I find the new one... well, I find it a little bit more mainstream. That gives me a slight feeling of disappointment because I prefer the more radical look of the old car.
</p>
<p>
 “Everyone seems to be doing these full-width light bars now and it might be harder to pick the Tesla out from something like a Hyundai.”
</p>

 Ben was more positive when he got inside. “The car feels so much more solid and for some reason it just feels bigger inside. I know it’s not, but maybe it’s the new materials and slightly updated design.
</p>
<p>
 “When you get in the new one, you're immediately impressed with the feeling of solidity. And I think the screen is improved. It seems much sharper, at least to me.
</p>
<p>
 I believe the materials have gotten better. The seats are now more supportive and slightly firmer. Also, the steering wheel has been altered, though I’m not sure why Tesla thinks they need to keep changing things.
</p>
<p>
 One enhancement that really caught my attention was the addition of a microphone button on the steering wheel for voice commands—I consider this a significant improvement. Additionally, I quickly discovered that the scroll wheel can be used to activate or deactivate the self-driving or autopilot feature.
</p>
<p>
 “So there are now three buttons on the right side of the steering wheel: one is the speaker, one is a scroll. The third one, which I really, really like, allows you to operate the cameras from the steering wheel. You can set it up so that you push the button and get an all-around view, which personally I find very useful.
</p>

 A major complaint from drivers of the latest Tesla Model 3 centres around the absence of stalks on either side of the steering wheel. Instead of a traditional left-side turn signal stalk, the Model 3 features control buttons integrated into the steering wheel itself. In response, Tesla introduced a new indicator stalk for the Model Y positioned to the left of the steering wheel; however, this model lacks a stalk on the right-hand side which was previously used for operating both the gear selection and Autopilot functions. How did all of this affect Ben’s experience behind the wheel?
</p>
<p>
 My car features a stalk on the right side, whereas the new Model Y only includes the turn signal on the left. Initially, I expected to strongly dislike not having a driving stalk on the right; however, I was comfortable with using the drive and park buttons on the screen instead. To move forwards or backwards, you simply scroll up and down on the screen. It seems that opening the door will also engage the parking function.
</p>
<p>
 Tesla claims that the new Model Y is over 20 per cent quieter on the move, thanks to new acoustic glass and improvements to body rigidity, too. Did Ben agree?
</p>
<p>
 It's considerably more peaceful," he remarked. "I observed this immediately upon entering and closing the door, but it becomes even more noticeable when you're in motion.
</p>
<p>
 Tesla's attempts to enhance the driving experience – which was a major concern for owners of the initial Model Y – seem to have been successful as well. "The ride felt much nicer," commented Ben. "It certainly seems more comfortable now. I also found the steering to be considerably smoother."

 Tesla has also asserted significant improvements in general quality, a point that Ben highlighted. "As I was driving my car along Scottsdale Road towards the test drive, I could hear various rattles," he mentioned. "However, when I took the new Model Y over the same section of road, there wasn’t a single rattle."
</p>
<p>
 Ben is already quite fond of the Full Self-Driving technology in his personal Model Y, and he shared his experience saying, "What surprised me about Tesla was that I ended up driving less and less. Instead, I found myself utilizing the Full Self- Driving feature increasingly often."
</p>
<p>
 I believe that if there is any enhancement in Full Self-Driving with the new vehicle, it's due to the chassis responding more favourably to commands compared to the current model.
</p>
<p>
 Ben also considers the range to be crucial, mentioning that the improvement in this aspect was a key factor in his decision to upgrade. "During my test drive of the new model, I found its estimated range to be around 326 miles," he explained. "Even over time, I believe the newer version will still maintain an impressive range exceeding 300 miles. Currently, my present Model Y manages slightly less than 300 miles."

 In regard to this crucial choice, will Ben opt for an upgrade from his present Model Y to the latest version? "Absolutely," he stated. "I am really excited about it: the extended battery life, enhanced comfort while driving, the quieter interior, and I particularly like the fresh control buttons on the steering wheel."

 Ben is even beginning to consider finalizing the deal as quickly as possible. "From what I gather, in the US, Tesla will waive the last three months of your lease and permit you to upgrade."
</p>

 “Without a doubt, I will do that.”
</p>
<p>
 The Tesla Model Y has become available for purchase in the US, where pre-orders can be placed for the Launch Series model priced at $61,630 prior to any deductions from federal tax credits. Over in the UK, the same Launch Series vehicle retails for £60,990.
