Chinese Toys Blamed for Record-Breaking Dangerous Product Alerts in EU

A striking 97% of them contained the synthetic perfume butylphenyl methylpropional, known by the trade name Lilial, named for its floral fragrance. </p> <p> The European Chemicals Agency lists the substance as damaging to fertility, liable to cause an allergic reaction on the skin, and it is being investigated as a potential endocrine disruptor. Other categories of goods flagged by the alert system include electrical appliances (10% of incidences), motor vehicles (9%), and chemical products (6%). </p> <p> The European consumer rights group BEUC suggested that the problem is not caused so much by a lack of legislation as a lack of enforcement, and the growing trend towards buying goods through websites and smartphone apps. </p> <p> “Market surveillance authorities not only need more financial, technical and human resources but also stronger legal enforcement powers against online marketplaces to ensure consumers are protected from unsafe products,” BEUC director Agustín Reyna said. </p> <p> With authorities unable to control every product entering the EU market the consumer organisation warned that official notifications to the alert system probably represent only the “tip of the iceberg”, and that it was impossible to know the number of products or units linked to a specific notification. </p> <h2> <strong> Stemming the tid </strong> </h2> <p> In addition to the incoming new toy safety standards, the EU adopted in December a General Product Safety Regulation. The Commission is working with national authorities to prepare for a first product safety “sweep” of websites to identify breaches of the rules. </p> <p> With 40% of all notifications concerning imports from China – a whopping 61% if cosmetics are not included (they appear to be coming mainly from Italy) – the EU executive has been working with the manufacturing superpower since 2006 in an effort to ensure Chinese firms are aware of EU product standards. </p> <p> In a joint action plan signed in 2023, the trading partners agreed to react within 21 days to any Safety Gate alerts, as well as holding regular workshops to discuss mutual enforcement challenges. </p> <p> "We must not allow everyday items we use to jeopardize our well-being or damage the environment around us," stated Michael McGrath, who oversees consumer protection at the European Union, during a media briefing. Bennett, aged 60, passed away on March 16 in Newburgh. </p> <p> Born on July 19, 1964, in Brooklyn, she is the offspring of Curley Ketter and Juanita Bennett. She completed her high school education at Walton High School in the Bronx in 1983 before obtaining an Associate Degree in Accounting from Monroe College. </p> <p> In 1993, Patricia took up the role of a member on the Beacon school board. For much of her career, she worked as an education professional at Astor Services. </p> <p> Patricia adored evenings spent watching movies, listening to hip-hop music, and going shopping with her daughter. Having explored numerous places, she and her spouse, Kirk Randolph, journeyed across all states from "Massachusetts to Florida" as well as everywhere in between. This zone is frequently identified by ecological advocates as "Cancer Alley" due to its significant pollutant levels. </p> <p> The lawsuit calls for a moratorium on the construction and expansion of petrochemical plants in St. James Parish. When the lawsuit was filed in March 2023, 20 of the 24 industrial facilities were in two sections of the parish with majority-Black populations. </p> <p> In a 2003 report, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency determined that St. James Parish had a higher rate of specific cancer fatalities compared to the nationwide average. The lawsuit points out that both predominantly Black areas within the parish were identified by an EPA assessment instrument – which utilizes emission data from neighboring sites – as facing substantial risks of developing cancer due to hazardous contaminants. </p> <p> For far too long, we've been raising the warning flag about the necessity of an embargo to stop further growth of these harmful industrial facilities in our communities," stated Gail LeBoeuf, a lifetime resident of the parish and co-founder of Inclusive Louisiana. She is also one of the plaintiffs involved in this legal action. </p> <p> The matter will now return to the U.S. District Court located in the Eastern District of Louisiana. This court had earlier determined that the litigation initiated by Inclusive Louisiana along with various community organizations was submitted beyond the allowed timeframe since the claims pertained to a 2014 parish zoning scheme. </p> <p> However, the federal court stated that the complaint had been submitted within the designated timeframe and pointed out that the lawsuit contained "numerous claims of discriminatory zoning choices" in the parish, with the 2014 plan serving as merely one instance of this pattern. </p> <p> The court acknowledged that these groups were entitled to take legal action against the parish for permitting industrial growth, which "defiles, devastates, and limits entry" to the graveyards where their enslaved forebears rest within the parish grounds.
